How much can baby’s belly handle each feed?
The answer may surprise you!
Being that their bellies are small to start, they require frequent feeds of smaller meals.
Newborns need to eat about every 2-3 hours, sometimes more.
They increase their feedings to tell your body to produce more milk as they grow and need more.
🫐Day 1: Their belly is about the size of a large blueberry or a marble. Your body produces colostrum to provide them with all the nutrients they need, making each feed about 1 teaspoon worth.
🍒Day 3: This is the average timeline most mother’s milk will come in. Their belly has grown to the size of 2 cherries. Your breast milk has a higher fat content and this also helps keep them satisfied longer in between feeds…until the next growth spurt 🤪
🍓Day 7: Some mama’s experience engorgement within the first week as their body is figuring out exactly how much baby needs each feed. Baby’s belly grows to about the size of a fig, but still requires feedings every 2-3 hours.
🥚Day 10-30: Now able to take in 2-5 oz per feed. Their intake depends on their weight and feeding patterns. It is very common for babies to lose weight after birth, and then gain back their weight as they take in more. Losing 7 % of their weight is totally normal, with the goal to stay within 10%, changing a plan or adding tools if exceeding 12%, and then make their way back to birth weight by 2 weeks.
But always a good reminder, bottle or breast, feeding on demand and following their cues is always recommended.
