The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) proudly introduces the Horticultural Therapist–Board Certified (HT-BC) credential—a new benchmark for professional excellence in horticultural therapy. Developed through the rigorous 2022 Job Task Analysis, the HT-BC is grounded in research and defines the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for competent, ethical, and effective practice.
The HT-BC is designed for:
- Professionals seeking formal recognition of their expertise and commitment to excellence.
- HTRs, HTMs, and licensed or certified professionals in human sciences or horticulture who wish to align with the profession's emerging gold standard.
- Practitioners committed to evidence-based care and delivering high-quality therapeutic services.

The inaugural examination window is October 31–November 14, 2026.
To celebrate this milestone, AHTA is offering special introductory pricing for the first exam window:

• HTMs and HTRs registered with AHTA: $75
• New candidates (non-HTM/HTR): $250

After the inaugural exam window, fees will increase to $450 for AHTA members and $595 for nonmembers.

The AHTA Horticultural Therapist-Board Certified (HT-BC) Certification is a formal recognition that an individual has met established professional standards in horticultural therapy. It assures employers, clients, and the public that certified professionals possess the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to practice effectively and ethically.

The certification process includes: - Defined education requirements - Verified professional experience - Successful completion of a comprehensive examination

In anticipation of AHTA’s Conference in October, the summer virtual book club will feature a book written by keynote speaker, Jennifer Jewell. The book, The Earth in Her Hands, 75 Extraordinary Women Working in the World of Plants, showcases women in the US and beyond working in assorted fields that revolve around plants. Each insightful profile includes the person’s work, her landscape, and her plant story. Clare Cooper Marcus is one of the amazing women included in this book.

The zoom book club for AHTA members will meet on August 13 at 7 pm EST. The giveaway of this book will be randomly drawn from those signed up for the zoom on August 3rd. Please join us!

🌿🏝️ We can hardly contain our excitement!

Join AHTA President Kelly Warrick and Conference Chair April Ellis as they look ahead to one of the most unique experiences of the 2026 AHTA Annual Conference—a visit to the Gardens of Alcatraz Island.

On Sunday, conference attendees will have the rare opportunity to explore all five gardens on the island and hear from renowned horticulturist Shelagh Fritz, whose work has helped transform Alcatraz into a place of beauty, reflection, and resilience.

More than a garden tour, this experience invites us to explore the complex history of Alcatraz, including its Indigenous significance and the stories of incarceration that continue to shape its legacy. Through the lens of horticulture, we'll examine how landscapes can support healing, remembrance, connection, and hope.
