Hernia surgery reinforces the weakened abdominal wall with synthetic mesh. There are three main types of hernia repair:

- Open (traditional) hernia repair: The surgeon makes a direct incision to access the hernia, pushes the organs back in place, repairs the tear, and reinforces the area with mesh.
- Laparoscopic hernia repair: Using small incisions, a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) helps the surgeon visualize the hernia. Additional instruments are inserted through the other incisions to perform the repair.
- Robotic hernia repair: Similar to laparoscopic surgery, but with robotic instruments controlled by the surgeon from a remote console for improved precision.
