Sinus troubles aren’t one-size-fits-all. Sinusitis can be acute (lasting four weeks or less) or chronic (persisting longer than 12 weeks). Treatment options can include home remedies, over the counter or prescription drugs and surgery, depending on severity and duration.

If you suffer from recurring symptoms, don’t wait it out. An ENT specialist can help you build a plan that matches what you’re experiencing.

Spring can be busy with travel, events and a lot of talking. If you’re dealing with hoarseness, laryngitis may be the cause. Laryngitis is swelling and irritation of the larynx (voice box) and can cause hoarseness or even voice loss. It can be acute or chronic, but it’s usually the result of a temporary viral infection or vocal strain and often clears up quickly. If voice changes linger or worry you, an ENT specialist can help you get answers.

Wondering if a sinus infection requires antibiotics? Many sinus infections are caused by a virus, which means antibiotics may not help.

Guidelines suggest checking your symptom pattern. If you’ve been sick fewer than 10 days and symptoms aren’t getting worse, it’s likely viral. If symptoms worsen over 10 days or improve and then go downhill, it’s more likely bacterial and may need antibiotics.

If you’re not sure where you fall, an ENT visit can help you get the right treatment.

Duration matters for sinus symptoms that come and go. Acute sinusitis lasts less than four weeks. Chronic sinusitis persists for 12 weeks or longer and can’t be diagnosed solely by symptoms. A doctor must confirm nose and sinus inflammation using scopes to look up the nose to make the diagnosis.

If you’re still congested weeks after you expect to feel better, it’s time to schedule an ENT evaluation. Give us a call!

Nasal polyps can come back, even after treatment. To lower the risk, pay attention to symptoms that last more than 10 days (like frequent sneezing, a runny nose, nasal blockage or fullness), and take medications exactly as directed if your ENT prescribes them.

Using a humidifier can also help reduce irritation from cold or dry air, and nasal saline spray can help keep passages clear.
