The mountains disappeared sometime before breakfast 🌧️

By the time the dining room clears, the rain is steady and the wind is leaning on the trees out front. Half the building has found a window. Nobody is in a hurry to leave it.

The front desk has a towel folded and ready for anyone who braved the walk from the parking lot. Maintenance is swapping out the entry mats before the lobby floor gets slick. Down the hall, the activity room has every lamp on, a puzzle half finished on the table, and the TV turned down low enough to hear the rain over it.

People who moved here from greener places will tell you the smell of rain is the thing they miss most. Today it came to them.

FOX5 says it dries out Friday and the sun is back for the weekend. Until then, the whole building has a front row seat. Rainy day plans, anyone?

Myth: Osteoporosis is a women’s problem.

Reality: It is more common in women, and that is where the myth comes from. But the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation says up to one in four men over 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis too. And here is the part every family should know, according to the International Osteoporosis Foundation: up to 80 percent of people who break a bone from osteoporosis are never diagnosed or treated for it. The wrist goes in a cast, the hip gets repaired, and nobody asks why a fall from standing height broke a bone in the first place.

Today is World Osteoporosis Day. If Mom or Dad has broken a bone since turning 50, bring one simple question to their next appointment and ask whether a bone density scan makes sense 💙

Our 6th Annual Halloween Trunk or Treat is Friday, October 30, from 4 to 6 PM right here at 4255 Spencer St, and this year is a big one: the Vegas Corvette Club car show, DJ Leon, a petting zoo, face paint, a balloon artist, a caricature artist, tarot readings, popcorn and cotton candy, and of course cars and candy.

Happy Boss’s Day from Sterling Ridge 💙

We know the calendar means managers. We’d like to file a small correction.

The people who set the standard around here don’t sit in an office. They’re at breakfast. They tell us when the coffee is weak and when the music is too loud. They notice when a new team member is nervous and they make that person feel welcome before we can. They remember our kids’ names. They ask about our weekends and they actually listen to the answers.

Every job in this building, from the kitchen to the front desk to the care team on the overnight shift, exists because of THEM. Not the other way around.

So today we’re skipping the mugs and the cards for the people with the titles. We’re giving the day to the residents, and we’ll keep doing the work the way they taught us to do it.

Open Enrollment started this morning. Before anyone in the family logs on to compare plans, put four things on the kitchen table first. 📋

✅ The letter that came in September. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans have to send an Annual Notice of Change by September 30, and it spells out exactly what changes for 2027. Most of the surprises hide in there.
✅ The current medication list, with doses. Drug coverage is where plans differ the most.
✅ The names of the doctors and the pharmacy that matter most, so you can confirm they’re still in network.
✅ The number for Nevada’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program. The counselors are free, impartial, and don’t sell anything.

You have until December 7. That’s plenty of time to do it right, and not so much that it should wait until Thanksgiving.

Somebody says “brr” in the lobby and three people laugh, because this is Las Vegas and we have waited months to say it. 🍂

The coldest morning of the season came through this week, and the whole building changed its wardrobe overnight. Cardigans that spent the summer on hangers are back on shoulders. The front desk has traded iced drinks for mugs. Someone in the dining room asks for oatmeal instead of fruit, and the kitchen is happy to oblige.

By ten the sun finds the windows along the hallway, and the chairs there fill up one by one. A team member stops to open the blinds a little wider, then keeps moving. Outside, the wind is kicking up and anything not tied down is on the move.

Nobody is in a hurry. The forecast says gusty today and a chance of rain next week, which in the desert sounds less like a complaint and more like a treat. ☕

Las Vegas gets maybe six weeks of mornings like this a year. We plan to enjoy every one.

Tomorrow, October 15, Medicare Open Enrollment opens and runs through December 7. Plans can change costs and coverage for the new year, so somebody has to look.

Myth: A daily crossword is all it takes to keep a brain sharp. 🧩

Reality: Today is National Train Your Brain Day, and puzzles are a fine place to start. They’re just not the whole workout. The 2024 Lancet Commission on dementia named 14 risk factors that can be changed, and estimated that addressing all of them could potentially prevent or delay 45% of dementia cases. Brain teasers aren’t what the list is about. It includes hearing loss, untreated vision loss, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, and social isolation.

So the hearing test Dad keeps putting off, the walk after dinner, the standing lunch with a friend? All brain training.

Do the crossword, then call a friend and tell them about it.
