ADHD and Emotional Regulation

"ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) is often thought of as being about having a short attention span and lack of focus.

However, another element of ADHD is problems with emotional regulation or the ability to control one’s emotions.

"Anger and anxiety are common emotions that people with ADHD find it difficult to regulate and so they often become overwhelmed by these feelings. This article will explore tips for emotional regulation in adults with ADHD.

What Are Emotional Regulation and Dysregulation?

Emotional regulation is the ability to match one’s emotions to the situation. Someone with good emotional regulation will respond appropriately, without overreacting.

The person with good emotional regulation will maintain calm in difficult situations as opposed to having emotional outbursts, and they will be able to think clearly and remain focused on their goals.

Conversely, emotional dysregulation is characterised by the inability to match one’s emotions to the situation.

Someone with emotional dysregulation may be prone to losing their temper, becoming highly anxious or otherwise distressed in ways that can appear to be out of alignment with the gravity of the situation.

Emotional dysregulation impairs a person’s ability to think clearly so they may make poor choices.

People who are unable to regulate their emotions are more likely to achieve less academically, invest their finances badly, or experience relationship breakdown."

Mental health involves more than our brain

A HeartMath article notes:

Mental health has recently become a much more prominent and openly discussed topic, which is a positive development. More people are acknowledging the importance of discussing and taking care of our mental well-being.

There is also a growing compassion for those suffering from mental health conditions.

Traditionally, when people refer to mental health, they tend to focus on the brain.

However, we now know that the heart plays a key role in our emotional and mental health. The term “mental health” includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

All of these areas affect how we think, feel, and act and help determine how well we’re able to handle stressful challenges and events, make decisions, and maintain healthy relationships.

Anxiety can have an unhealthy grip on our life. CBT therapy can help.

Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD explains:

"Feeling anxious from time to time is just normal. But when you can't seem to shake your concerns and your daily life is a constant state of worry and fear, then anxiety has taken an unhealthy grip on your life.

In addition to emotional symptoms like always anticipating the worst, feeling restless all the time or having a constant nagging concern, anxiety can also have a lot of physical symptoms including a pounding heart, sweaty palms, feeling sick in your stomach, headaches and feeling tired.

Anxiety is our body's ancient and innate response to stressful situations such as being attacked by an aggressive animal or person.

While we can't stop anxiety entirely because it is a natural response, we can take back the control of our lives so that anxiety does not get in the way of daily functioning.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you overcome anxiety. You see, it is not external events that trigger your anxiety; instead it is how you perceive the events that cause your anxiety.

Using our online therapy for anxiety, you’ll learn how to identify your negative thinking patterns that cause your anxiety and replace them with more realistic and positive thoughts."

The Psych Central mental health site notes "Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of evidence-based psychotherapy used to help treat a wide range of physical and mental health conditions including: depression, anxiety and chronic pain."

Am I really meditating? The EEG Headband lets you know in real time.

Muse co-founder Ariel Garten explains how the EEG headband works:

“Muse tracks your brain activity...the headband is like a heart rate monitor. As it tracks your brain activity, it sends that information to your computer, smartphone or tablet, where you can do exercises that track your brain activity in real time, and give you real time feedback to teach you how to calm and settle your mind.”..
