When most people think about the health risks of alcohol, they think about the liver.

But alcohol can affect your heart, another vital organ, too.

Over time, heavy alcohol use can increase the risk of high blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, heart disease, and stroke. In some cases, these effects can develop gradually, making them easy to overlook until serious health problems occur.

During , it's worth asking an important question:
Are you taking care of your heart the same way you take care of everything else?

Knowing your blood pressure.
Understanding your risk factors.
Talking honestly with your healthcare provider about alcohol use.
Paying attention to changes in your health.

These conversations matter.

Your heart works hard for you every day. Taking steps to protect it could make all the difference for your future health and well-being. đź’›

This time of year is filled with celebrations.
Graduations.
Weddings.
Babies.
New homes.
Promotions.
Retirement.
Big moments that deserve to be recognized and celebrated loudly.

But there are other milestones that deserve that same kind of celebration, too!
The day someone chooses recovery.
30 days sober.
One year sober.
Keeping promises.
Choosing healthier habits.
Walking away from toxic relationships.
Asking for help.
Trying again after setbacks.
Continuing to show up even when it’s hard.

Recovery milestones represent courage, healing, growth, and countless choices most people never see behind the scenes.

This June, we want to celebrate those victories, too. đź’›

If you’re celebrating a sobriety milestone or another meaningful recovery win this month, share it in the comments so we can celebrate with you!

Rock bottom may get the headlines, but the reality is that many people struggling with alcohol or substance addiction still show up.

For work.
For their families.
For the gym.
For their responsibilities.

Addiction lies. It tells us that if the bills are paid, we're meeting our obligations, and we make it to our kid's piano recital, then everything must be fine.

But if you're finding it difficult to go a day or a week without drinking, or if one or two drinks regularly turn into five or six, it may be time to have a conversation.

Addiction doesn't always look the way people expect it to. You don't have to lose everything before asking for help.

A lot of adults with ADHD grow up feeling like they’re the problem.

Too distracted.
Too impulsive.
Too emotional.
Too inconsistent.
Always trying harder just to keep up.

And for some people, substances can temporarily feel like relief from the constant mental noise, overwhelm, restlessness, or emotional exhaustion they’ve been carrying for years.

That’s part of why ADHD and addiction are so often connected.

Understanding what may actually be happening beneath the surface can replace shame with understanding and help people realize they are not alone. đź’›

Some of the most important people in recovery are the ones who sit with you on the hardest days.
The ones who notice when you’re struggling.
Who talk you through the moments you want to give up.
Who remind you that detox, fear, homesickness, and shame do not have to be the end of your story.

Endeeia, one of our Treatment Advocates here at at Desert Hope Treatment Center, shares why she chose this work after watching addiction impact people she loves.

And honestly, it shows in the way she cares for our patients every single day.

When someone walks through our doors, they’re often exhausted, scared, uncertain, and carrying so much pain.

Sometimes what helps them stay one more night…
is knowing someone is willing to listen.

Recovery is not just treatment plans and therapy sessions.
It’s human connection.
Support.
Compassion.
And people who refuse to let you struggle alone.

If you’ve ever had someone help you through a difficult season, tell us about them in the comments. 💛

And if someone you love is struggling right now, send this to them so they know they’re not alone.

A lot of people who are struggling with their mental health do not look like they’re struggling at all.

They’re still going to work.
Still answering texts.
Still taking care of other people.
Still functioning well enough that nobody realizes how much they’re carrying internally.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, Desert Hope Treatment Center Clinical Director Ari Chelli spoke with KSNV News 3, Las Vegas about “high-functioning distress” and the hidden warning signs people often miss.

Because sometimes anxiety, burnout, emotional exhaustion, trauma, or substance use struggles exist long before someone reaches a visible breaking point.

Conversations like this matter because people should not have to completely fall apart before they feel worthy of support.

A lot of first responders spend their careers being the person everyone else depends on.

The calm one.
The strong one.
The one who keeps showing up no matter what they’ve seen, carried, or pushed down to get through the next shift.

But the reality is, this work changes people.

And sometimes the stress starts showing up outside the job:
Trouble sleeping.
Drinking more than before.
Burnout.
Anger.
Isolation.
Feeling emotionally numb at home.
Living constantly on edge.

A lot of people wait until things completely fall apart before they consider getting help.

They shouldn’t have to.

Desert Hope’s First Responder Lifeline is a program designed specifically for law enforcement officers, EMTs, firefighters, corrections officers, and dispatchers with confidential mental health and substance use treatment designed around the realities
of the job.

No judgment.
No department politics.
No need to explain the culture.

Just real support from people who understand that carrying everything alone eventually takes a toll.🤍

All gave some. Some gave all.

Today, we remember the men and women of the Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and we honor the families they left behind.

May their courage and sacrifice live on in every loved one and fellow service member who carries them forward. đź’™

A lot of people picture addiction or mental health struggles looking like someone whose entire life has fallen apart.

But that’s not always what it looks like.

Sometimes it looks like someone who keeps showing up to work.
Who answers emails.
Pays the bills.
Takes care of everyone else.
Smiles in meetings.
Makes the dinner reservation.
Gets the promotion.

And still feels like they’re barely holding it together underneath the weight of it all.

You do not have to lose everything before you ask for help.

You do not have to wait until the consequences get worse.
You do not have to hit some dramatic version of rock bottom to get help.

A lot of people are struggling quietly right now.
Some very successful people.
Some very loved people.
Some people nobody would suspect.

If that’s you, this is your reminder:
You can call before everything collapses.

And honestly, the earlier you do, the more of your life you get to keep!

Want a quick way to support your recovery and feel really good?

👉 Get moving!

Studies show that even 15 minutes a day of purposeful movement can improve cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and crush stress.

The best part? You don't need a gym, equipment, or a ton of time.

Here are six easy moves you can do anywhere, anytime:

🪑 Chair squats. Stand in front of a sturdy chair, lower yourself until you touch the seat, then push back up.

🍳 Counter push-ups. Hands on a countertop, angle in, and push. Easy on the joints and great for your chest and arms.

🦵 Leg overs. Lie on your back, shoulders flat, and slowly drop your knees side to side. Gentle on your back, strong on your core.

🚪 Wall sit. Back against the wall, sink to 90 degrees and hold. Builds leg strength and mental toughness at the same time.

đź«€March in place. Knees up, arms pumping. Get that heart rate up right where you stand, no excuses needed.

👟 Calf raises. Hold a chair for balance, then rise onto your toes. Low-impact, easy to sneak in anywhere, and great for circulation.
