Sixteen percent of youth surveyed by Mental Health America in 2020 (the newest data available) reported having at least one major depressive episode in the previous year. That's roughly 1 in every 6 kids.

Major depression is diagnosed when someone:
- Has a persistently low or depressed mood
- Is less interest in pleasurable activities
- Has feelings of guilt or worthlessness
- Lacks energy
- Has poor concentration
- Experiences appetite changes, psychomotor retardation or agitation, sleep disturbances or suicidal thoughts

Childhood is supposed to be the best time of our lives, but mental illness is robbing too many of our kids of the happiness they deserve.

A licensed therapist who specializes in children's issues can help by listening attentively, compassionately, and without judgment. In return, kids will get a caring space where they feel safe to speak openly and honestly about their feelings.

If you're like most people, you wouldn't think twice about going to see a doctor about a physical illness. But what many people still don't realize is, mental illness is actually a PHYSICAL illness.

Fortunately, many types of mental illness can vastly improve through talk therapy, or talk therapy combined with medication.

Anxiety is an understandable response to many different experiences for many different reasons. It can also be a living hell for those who suffer from it.

But the good news is, anxiety can be successfully treated. First of all, don't conspire against yourself! When that negative self-talk hits, hit back. Here are some ideas:

- First, be mindful that the negative self-talk is happening
- Then, offset it with positive (or even neutral) self-talk
- Treat yourself like a friend by showing yourself compassion
- Acknowledge your inner critic and speak back with kindness
- Implement a self-care routine that soothes you
- Reach out to the people who support you
- Work with a licensed mental health professional

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 🖤 It is a moment to reflect. To be grateful for how far we've come, knowing we still have so much more to go. No matter where we are in life, we can choose to be our best selves.

Dr. King encourages us to see that there is tremendous value in everyone, even those doing work that others might not consider glamorous, exciting, or even valuable. It lifts up those who might feel unseen or unappreciated.

Whether you don't feel valued yourself, or perhaps look down on others sometimes, Dr. King's words are a beautiful reminder of how unique and worthy we ALL are.

When you're struggling with your mental health, you can feel drawn to talk to anyone who cares (or seems to). But while your friends and family do care about you, they (1) probably have their own issues and (2) most likely aren't trained to help you with yours.

Friends and family can be a comfort when you're feeling low...but there's also a chance they could make you feel worse.

If you're looking for a comfortable space where someone will not only listen to you, but help you and not judge you, therapy might be for you! 💛🐝

This new year is a time for self love and self care. Here are some of my favorite New Year's Resolutions to try:

- Daily walks
- Daily gratitude journal
- Nighttime self care routine
- Daily affirmations
- Start Therapy
- Start yoga
- Dance more
- Learn something new
