🥑 Did someone say Avocados?? 🥑
Many parents often hit the "it was fine" wall with their children when asking about their day. Choosing to be specific can help, and the Avocado and the Pit conversation can help them visualize their day. The best part? You can have chips and guacamole while talking about the best parts of the day and the parts you wish were better. Give this conversation style a try and let us know how it goes!

Quality time or Quantity of time? Studies show that children develop better life skills and are less likely to become addicted to substances when they have high-quality times with their parents.

It is common for parents to stress about the amount of time they spend with their children simply not being enough. This can cause parents to stress, feel guilty or ashamed, and overexert themselves to supply more of their time to their children. The reality of this situation is that stressed, tired, anxious parents have lower-quality experiences with their children. It is important as parents to love and care for yourself like you love and care for your children.

When you do spend time with children, reduce distractions and have fun together. Try reading a book together, going for a walk, or playing a game! These interactions go a long way to a child's success.

More studies are coming out highlighting the impacts of not giving your full attention to your child. A recent study done by Tel Aviv University found that parents on smartphone or reading a magazine were 4 times less communicative when playing with their child than parents who weren't using a device or magazine.

We definitely want to note that this post is not intended to shame parents into spending less time on their phone. Our hope is that it encourages parents to give their children their focus and attention when talking or playing together. This will help foster a healthy relationship as well as help a child build their communication, observation, and language formation skills.

We hope that you spend a little more quality time with your children this week 😊

We had a chance to ask Dr. Henscheid his thoughts on how to improve the mental health of children. This is what he said:

"Adults often reference their favorite [childhood] memories as being a big event such as a trip to a sandy beach, an amusement park, or camping expedition. Other than the thrill of adventure, what these memories generally have in common is the increased attention and availability of their caregivers. Children want to connect with their parents, learn from them, share experiences, and enjoy time together. Increasing the frequency of these moments don’t necessarily need to be attached to a trip, but they do require focused and sustained attention from everyone involved."

This week is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. To raise awareness about eating disorders, we are filling this week with awesome information, helpful tips, and the facts surrounding eating disorders. NEDA, the organization that started this campaign is an excellent resource for ways to get involved and take action to help decrease cases of eating disorders. Their theme for this week is "See the change, be the change." It is a campaign to inspire and encourage individuals to speak up when they think a friend might have an eating disorder. We highly recommend checking them at nationaleatingdisorders.org

February is Black History Month and we wanted to highlight some major Black pioneers in Children's mental health. Today we focus on James P Comer and Mamie Phipps Clark.

James P Comer was instrumental in focusing on a child as a whole person in school - not just an academic information absorber. He instituted a groundbreaking education reform that addressed the link between academic learning and a child's emotional and psychological health. His work changed the way schools educate and care for children.

Mamie Phipps Clark, alongside her husband Kenneth Bancroft Clark, conducted studies on the psychological effects of segregation on children and was instrumental in ending segregation in schools. Her passion for children's mental health led her to open “The Northside Center for Child Development” - a psychological service center for minorities in the 1940's.

The knowledge and work of these two people has lead to major wins in the mental health world - we highlight and honor their stories today.

Happy Black History Month!
