๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’™ Mental Health Monday: Coping Skills for Kids ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿง

Every child experiences big emotions, whether it's feeling angry, worried, frustrated, sad, or overwhelmed. Teaching children healthy coping skills helps them build confidence, resilience, and emotional strength.

๐ŸŒŸ Try these kid-friendly coping skills:

๐ŸŽˆ Balloon Breathing โ€“ Take a slow, deep breath in and imagine filling up a balloon. Slowly let the air out.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding โ€“ Find:
โ€ข 5 things you can see ๐Ÿ‘€
โ€ข 4 things you can touch โœ‹
โ€ข 3 things you can hear ๐Ÿ‘‚
โ€ข 2 things you can smell ๐Ÿ‘ƒ
โ€ข 1 thing you can taste ๐Ÿ‘…

๐ŸŽจ Draw Your Feelings โ€“ Sometimes it's easier to draw emotions than talk about them.

๐Ÿšถ Take a Movement Break โ€“ Go for a walk, stretch, dance, or play outside to help release stress.

๐ŸŽต Create a Calm Playlist โ€“ Listen to music that helps you feel relaxed and safe.

๐Ÿงธ Use a Comfort Item โ€“ A favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or sensory toy can help children feel calm.

๐Ÿ’ญ Positive Self-Talk โ€“ Practice saying:
โœจ "I can do hard things."
โœจ "This feeling won't last forever."
โœจ "I am brave."

๐Ÿค Talk to Someone You Trust โ€“ Sharing feelings with a parent, teacher, family member, or counselor can make a big difference.

Remember, coping skills are like muscles, the more we practice them, the stronger they become!

At Kids Counseling, we help children, youth, and families build healthy coping skills and emotional wellness

Program Spotlight: Comprehensive Community Support Services (CCSS)

Many families have heard of therapy, but have you ever wondered what happens when it's time to put those skills into practice?

That's where Comprehensive Community Support Services (CCSS) comes in.

Unlike traditional office-based services, CCSS meets youth and families where life happensโ€”in their homes, schools, and communities. Our Community Support Workers (CSWs) can also provide transportation to and from appointments, helping make life easier for families.

While therapy helps individuals process emotions and gain insight, CCSS focuses on behaviorsโ€”helping youth and families learn, practice, and apply skills in real-world situations.

CCSS serves youth ages 3โ€“18. Youth who are enrolled prior to their 18th birthday may continue participating until age 21.

Families can learn to:

โœ… Learn healthy coping skills
โœ… Build confidence and independence
โœ… Improve communication and relationships
โœ… Develop routines and daily living skills
โœ… Navigate challenges at home, school, and in the community
โœ… Work toward personal and family goals

CCSS is unique because support can be offered during non-traditional business hours to better meet the needs of families. Support doesn't stop when the appointment ends. Our team works alongside families to help turn goals into lasting success.

We also offer on-call crisis support after 5:00 PM and on weekends.

๐ŸŒŸ Meet Francine Ortega, MSW
-CCSS Program Director

Francine was born and raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and brings more than 25 years of experience serving children, youth, and families throughout Las Vegas and the surrounding communities.

She earned her Master's Degree in Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University in 2007 and has served in a variety of roles including Residential Treatment, Direct Care Staff, MST, Case Manager, and Program Director.

Francine specializes in trauma-informed and attachment-based approaches that help youth and families build healthy relationships, strengthen coping skills, and promote emotional well-being. Her passion is helping families build on their strengths while creating meaningful and lasting change.

Under Francine's leadership, the CCSS team is committed to providing hands-on support that empowers youth and families to succeed not only in treatment, but in everyday life.

At Kids Counseling we know that every child and family is different. That's why we offer a variety of programs designed to provide support, build on strengths and help families navigate life's challenges.

๐Ÿ’™ Individual & Family Therapy
Sometimes life can feel overwhelming. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space for children, teens, and families to explore challenges, process emotions, gain insight, and work toward positive change together.

๐Ÿค Comprehensive Community Support Services (CCSS)
CCSS helps youth and families put those skills into practice in their everyday lives. Whether it's learning coping skills, managing emotions, improving communication, building routines, or connecting with community resources, our team works alongside families to support growth and success.

๐Ÿก Community-Based Prevention, Intervention & Reunification (CBPIR)
CBPIR helps strengthen families by providing support, education, and resources designed to improve family relationships, increase stability, and promote safe and healthy home environments.

โญ High Fidelity Wraparound (HFW)
When families are facing multiple challenges, Wraparound brings together a team of supports to help. This family-driven program focuses on strengths, goals, and building a plan that helps youth succeed at home, in school and in the community.

๐Ÿฉบ Psychiatric Services & Medication Management
Our Child Psychiatrist works with children, teens, and families to better understand behavioral health concerns and determine the most appropriate treatment options. Through assessment, education, and ongoing support, we work together to find the best path forward for each child and family.
