New Zealand Blackcurrant supplementation may be a useful intervention in your practice. There seems to be some solid evidence suggesting improvements to both exercise capacity and recovery. Further research on the potential blunting of adaptations would be useful to better periodize its use in practice (E.g. will it mess with driving hypertrophy/body comp in the preseason?). Nevertheless, with positive effects on muscle damage, perceived soreness and ROM in the 96 hours following exercise… it’s for sure worth testing out in an elite team sport setting!

Here are a few tips on how to maximize your preseason and take your program to the next level, no matter whether high sc...

Beta alanine is a supplement that many practitioners are not 100% confident with. However, there’s a robust body of research to show its value in a team sport/repeated sprint setting!

BA is 1 of my key supplements for high performance basketball. Alongside, creatine monohydrate, dietary nitrate and caffeine.

Working in the NBA Draft process is a unique and challenging position for a Nutritionist. Over the years I have learned to balance high performance philosophies with NBA expectations and industry standards (which are not always set by performance professionals but nevertheless have to be factored in).

This is the framework I use at IMPACT to maximize adaptations in a short window (2-3 months) and to “tell the story” of change to agents, NBA front office staff and organisations, which can ultimately inform conversations and decisions on draft stock and position.

1. Assess: “If you’re not assessing you’re guessing” - Consultation, SNKQ, Body comp (ISAK/InBody 770 (DXA preferable), Biomarkers (E.g. deficiencies, metabolic health, markers of inflammation and recovery status) and combine testing.

2. Compare: Based on assessments, I compare each athlete to the mean scores of position-matched draftees from past selections. Although we know as performance professionals that this is highly individual and not necessarily indicative of in-game performance potential, the decision makers may not and therefore rely on previous data as gospel.

3. Project: Build a suitable goal and trajectory for each athlete and place a timeframe on it (E.g. when NBA workouts begin, or worst case scenario, the combine). At this time communication with the agents and on-court staff is absolutely critical!!

So many athletes are fixated on their ultimate goals (E.g. getting a division 1 scholarship or making the NBA) and in turn lose sight of the day to day strategies and commitment needed to get there (E.g. never skipping breakfast, eating c&p every 3 hours, staying hydrated, nailing sleep, shooting 500 extra shots a day, watching an hour of film etc). This is why achievable short, medium and long term goals are necessary for long lasting progress.

Everybody is motivated by the ultimate goal. But not everybody can fall in love with the process. The athletes who can, have the best chance of ‘making it’!

I grew up idolising this guy, replicating his moves in the park (in the pouring rain), wearing his number on my jersey and dreaming of one day meeting him…

Fast forward 15 years and he’s sitting in my office with his son talking about nutrition for basketball performance. CRAZY!

P.s. I work with hundreds of pro hoopers and never take pics with clients - but I had to make an exception!

If you’re an elite level athlete or practitioner in team sports and aren’t at least considering dietary nitrate… I’m curious as to why!?

The typical ‘western diet’ is very low in nitrate-rich foods, so aside from the PROVEN benefits to PERFORMANCE this can be a crucial aspect of improving health too… “sometimes your best ability is your availability” gotta be healthy to be available 🤔

I very rarely push any supplements right out the gate… but it’s fascinating how many ways in which creatine supplementation can SUPPORT health and performance (emphasis on support here, because if your diet is still whack, creatine isn’t gunna do sh*t)

Follow these 4 steps to build a Fuelling Plan for your athletes.

1) Build an athlete profile with biometrics, goals and kcal/macro needs.

2) Translate macro needs into serving sizes.

3) Build an individualized fuelling plan based on athlete profile, performance needs and schedule (distribution and timing will be key here).

4) Provide food lists with serving sizes so athletes can easily “plug n play” to meet nutrition needs easily (and flexibly).

After years of spending wayyyyyy too much time calculating things down to the gram for my athletes, I can confirm that this is in fact the sports nutritionist/dietitian cheat code!!

* Also an excellent tool for sports nutritionists/dietitians in interdisciplinary teams to help chefs to bring recommendations to life.
