💚 The Guilt of Cancelling Plans When You Have Gastroparesis 💚
💚 One of the hardest things about living with Gastroparesis isn’t just the physical symptoms—it’s the guilt that comes with having to cancel plans.
💚 You might spend days looking forward to seeing friends, attending a family gathering, going shopping, or simply getting out of the house. Then Gastroparesis has other ideas.
The nausea becomes overwhelming.
The pain flares.
The bloating becomes unbearable.
The exhaustion takes over.
Or maybe you simply can’t move far from a bathroom.
💚 So you send that message:
“I’m so sorry, I can’t make it.”
And then the guilt starts.
💚 You worry people will think you’re unreliable.
You wonder if they’re disappointed.
You fear they won’t invite you next time.
You feel like you’ve let everyone down.
But the truth is this:
💚 You are not cancelling because you don’t care.
💚 You are not cancelling because you’re lazy.
💚 You are not cancelling because you don’t want to be there.
You are cancelling because your body is fighting a battle most people cannot see.
💚 People with Gastroparesis often push themselves far beyond their limits just to keep commitments. Sometimes that can lead to days of worsening symptoms and recovery afterward.
It is okay to listen to your body.
It is okay to choose rest.
It is okay to put your health first.
💚 The people who truly care about you will understand that your absence is not a reflection of your love, friendship, or commitment. It is simply the reality of living with a chronic illness.
💚 To everyone carrying that guilt today: be gentle with yourself. Surviving Gastroparesis is hard enough without adding self-blame to the burden. 💚
You are doing the best you can, and that is enough.
💚 Sending love to everyone who has ever had to cancel plans because their body said “not today.”
💚 This is a feeling so many people with Gastroparesis can relate to. You’re often grieving the life you planned while trying to manage the reality of how you feel each day.
