Great information for feeding your young horses 🐴

Myth: High protein diets cause developmental problems in horses.

Fact: According to Kentucky Equine Research, feeding more protein than a growing horse needs does not increase the growth rate any more than feeding to meet the protein requirement. Likewise, restricting protein will not result in improved bone growth, and can actually be harmful by decreasing feed intake, growth rate and skeletal development.

⭐ For growing horses, protein and mineral intake must be in proportion to the energy level of the diet. Not in excess, not deficient.

Colostrum is liquid gold for newborn foals and having a quality bank on hand can truly be life-saving.

At Star Mountain Equine Reproduction, we always recommend collecting and storing colostrum from mares with excellent quality so you’re prepared if a foal ever needs extra support.

🍼 How much is safe to bank?
You can safely collect about 8–16 oz from a mare shortly after foaling, as long as the foal has nursed and received adequate colostrum first. The foal always comes first. We like to freeze in smaller amounts 60-120 per freezer bag for easy storage.

🧪 Best practices for collection & storage:
• Use a clean filter (we use a semen filter) to remove debris
• Store in freezer-safe bags or containers, you can use human breast milk storage freezer bags
• Label clearly with:
– Mare’s name
– Colostrum quality, use a colostrum refractometer to test quality
– Date collected

❄️ Freeze promptly and store flat for easy thawing later. When needed, thaw slowly in warm water, never microwave, as it can destroy vital antibodies. You can safely store in freezer for 1-2 years.

Being prepared ahead of time can make all the difference in those critical first hours of a foal’s life.

There’s nothing quite like a day in repro when everything lines up just right 🙌🏼

At Star Mountain Equine Reproduction, we had one of those unforgettable wins, a donor mare that double ovulated and gave us not one, but TWO embryos on flush day 💥

An 8-day and a 6-day embryo, both recovered and looking great. This is exactly why timing, management, and a whole lot of dedication matter in this industry. Days like this make the long hours worth it and remind us why we love what we do 🐴✨

Double ovulations don’t always guarantee double success, but when they do… it’s a pretty special kind of magic.

IgG testing is one of the most critical steps in ensuring a newborn foal gets the strong start it needs.

When a foal is born, it does not have a developed immune system. Instead, it relies entirely on the antibodies found in the mare’s colostrum (first milk) to protect it from infection. This transfer of immunity happens within the first 12–24 hours of life. If the foal does not receive enough high-quality colostrum, it can result in what’s called Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT), a leading cause of illness and even death in young foals.

That’s where IgG testing comes in.

An IgG test measures the level of antibodies in the foal’s blood, typically around 12–24 hours after birth. This simple test gives us a clear picture of whether the foal has received adequate immunity. If levels are low, early intervention such as plasma transfusion can be life-saving and dramatically improve the foal’s chances of staying healthy.

Why it matters:
• Early detection prevents serious illness
• Protects against infections like pneumonia, diarrhea, and septicemia
• Allows for immediate treatment when needed
• Gives peace of mind that your foal is on the right track

At Star Mountain Equine Reproduction, we strongly recommend IgG testing for every foal. It’s a small step that makes a huge difference in their future.

Healthy foals start with strong immunity 💪🏼🐴
