Researchers at the University of Virginia have uncovered a fascinating pattern in 1,678 reported cases of children who appear to remember past lives.

In these cases, investigators identified a specific deceased person whose life matched details the child had described. Researchers then examined the time between that person's death and the child's birth.

The median gap? Just 16 months.

When the previous person died unexpectedly - through an accident, violence or a sudden medical crisis - the gap tended to be much shorter.

In cases involving the most unexpected deaths, the median interval was around 12 months, compared with 21 months when death was most anticipated. That's roughly a 43% difference.

And there was another surprising finding as well. The pattern was actually stronger among families whose religious beliefs didn't support reincarnation. Researchers also tested whether factors such as family connections, the accuracy of the children's statements and the quality of the evidence could explain the relationship, but these factors didn't account for it.

The University of Virginia's archive contains thousands of cases from around the world of reincarnation. Many cases involving children often begin talking about these memories between the ages of 2 and 5, and the accounts tend to fade as they get older.

What makes the research so fascinating is the rigor that has gone into it, and that researchers haven't identified a mechanism that explains it.

To me, I do believe we reincarnate. But, strictly speaking objectively, the evidence they present suggests a strong possibility that at least some people are reincarnating. If not some, why not all?

Whatever your beliefs about life after death, it's a remarkable example of researchers taking an unusual human experience and looking for patterns that can be tested across a large collection of cases.
