Course Spotlight:
"Now You're Going to Get Your Comeuppance": The Normalization of Domestic Abuse in the Golden Era Hollywood Films:
This course critically examines how domestic abuse was not only present but often normalized in Golden Era Hollywood cinema. By scrutinizing classic films of the period through the lenses of feminist theory, cultural criticism, and social history, students will explore how cinematic narratives and aesthetic choices contributed to a sanitized portrayal of abusive dynamics. We will analyze the role of studio mandates, censorship codes, and prevailing gender ideologies in constructing on-screen relationships that obscured the realities of power imbalance and violence. Students will engage with a variety of primary materials—from film clips and scripts to archival reviews and contemporary critiques—to understand how domestic abuse was embedded in narratives that, on the surface, celebrated romance and glamour. Discussions and assignments will challenge participants to deconstruct the aesthetic and ideological frameworks that allowed such portrayals to go unchallenged, and to consider the lasting impact these representations have on modern perceptions of gender and violence. Through lectures, film screenings, and critical writing exercises, this course offers a transformative examination of Hollywood's Golden Era, urging students to confront uncomfortable truths and reframe traditional interpretations of classic films. Whether you are passionate about film studies, gender studies, or cultural analysis, this course invites you to question how the legacy of these films continues to shape our understanding of domestic abuse and its normalization in popular culture.

Dean Spotlight:
Jamelle Zablow-Moloney, MMSe
Integration, Embodiment and Spiritual Coach & Healing Practitioner, Plant-Based Medicine Curator and Instructor, Lifestyle & Behavior Coach, New Earth High Priestess, Author, Educator, and Creator of Bare Roots Energy
Hello! I am Jamelle, Dean of Health and Wellness at the Galiah Institute, and owner and operator of Bare Roots Energy, here in Lawrence, Kansas. I am a Lifestyle & Behavior Change Coach, a practitioner and teacher of the Energy Healing Arts. I founded Bare Roots Energy Reiki & Meditation Center here in Lawrence, KS, in 2019, and specialize in the integration of Daily Wellness Practices and Healing Paths into the daily lives of my clients. Through this work, I assist individuals in fine-tuning their expression for creation and harmony, healing, and growth.
I have practiced energy awareness and whole-person wellness since childhood, studied and taught the intricacies of anxiety, depression, and overwhelm as an educator since 2008, and now focus my work and skills on coaching clients through wellness and life-changing shifts. I am so passionate about the work that I do because of the profound change it has brought into my life and body, and into the lives of those I help each day.
Through my work, I connect with individuals to understand their needs and dreams, and together we forge a path and plan to create a platform of healing and growth for them to springboard from. When we approach both trauma and goals from all four sides- the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual- we can better see all our options as well as what we have yet to heal from to realize our dreams. My favorite part of working in this field is getting to know those I work with deeply to help them fine-tune their journey with the unique tools they need. Along with Personal Coaching and Healing, I also offer courses in the Energy Healing Arts and Plant-Based Medicine, and certification programs for Energy Healers in training.
Aside from my degrees in Special Education and Education Theory, I have trained as a Master Reiki Teacher and Healer, an Akashic Record Reader and Healer, as a Plant-Based Medicine Consultant and Lifestyle Coach, and as a High Priestess in the New Earth Priestess Studies. I am a Master Teacher and Practitioner of Usui Reiki Ryoho, Holy Fire Reiki, and Dragon Reiki; an Advanced Practitioner and Teacher of Source Light Infusion Therapy; an Advanced Practitioner of the Crystalline Consciousness Technique; a Behavior Change Coach; a Plant-Based Medicine Consultant; and a Special Education Teacher.

Faculty Spotlight:
Mary Jane is an astrologer and tarot reader based in Geneva, Switzerland. After moving to Europe to pursue a career as a dental hygienist, Mary Jane studied astrology in French, while reading all the British and American masters of her art. In parallel to these studies, she plunged into the symbolic world of the Tarot that she uses often to deepen the inner sense of the outer, more Earth-based events indicated in a chart reading. More recently, she has included the use of Bach flower essences, of great value in helping her clients “get through” certain difficult planetary transits!

Mary Jane has been consulting and teaching astrology for forty years and is still learning valuable lessons from each natal chart that comes across her desk. She consults in English and French and is the author of Desire and Design: a Look at Venus and Mars in Action, desire-and-design.com, which she describes as “an astrology book for art lovers and an art book for astrology lovers”.

The Galiah Institute of Spirituality and Wellness is a place to explore spirituality, consciousness, and well-being in a thoughtful and grounded way. It was created for those who are drawn to ask deeper questions—about meaning, experience, and the nature of reality—but who also want space to engage those questions without being confined to a single framework.
Here, learning is not just about information. It is about experience, reflection, and the process of making sense of ideas in a way that feels real and applicable. Rather than separating academic inquiry from lived experience, the Institute brings them together, allowing for a more complete and personal understanding to develop over time.
The Institute is organized into three areas of focus: Spirituality, Consciousness and Metaphysical Studies, and Health and Wellness. Each offers a different lens, but they are designed to work together—supporting both exploration and integration as individuals move through their own process of learning and growth.
Whether you are here to explore a single idea or to engage more deeply over time, the Galiah Institute offers a space to learn, reflect, and connect in a way that is both meaningful and grounded.
