Milestones Are Windows, Not Deadlines 🪟

Developmental milestones are skills most children are expected to develop as they grow: like holding their head up, sitting, walking, running, jumping, playing and moving through their environment. Milestones also include how children learn, communicate, interact and care for themselves.

Every child develops differently, but milestones can help parents and healthcare providers recognize when a child may benefit from a closer look or additional support.

🚩 Consider reaching out for an evaluation if your child:
•Is not meeting expected movement milestones for their age
•Loses a movement skill they previously had
•Seems unusually stiff or floppy
•Consistently uses one side of their body differently than the other
•Has difficulty with balance, coordination or keeping up with peers
•Frequently falls or struggles with everyday movement
•Has difficulty walking, running, jumping, climbing stairs or participating in play
•Moves in a way that simply makes you wonder, “Is this something we should check?”

Physical therapists are movement experts who evaluate and support children with developmental and motor delays. 🤸

💛If something about your child’s movement or development doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to reach out. Parents are often the first to notice differences in their child’s development.

Early identification can help children access evaluation, intervention and other needed supports sooner.

✨ When in doubt, reach out. You don’t have to “wait and see.”

WHAT ARE OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL DISORDERS (OMDs)? OMDs are disorders of the muscles and functions of the face and mouth. 👄

WHAT ARE SOEM EXAMPLES OF OMDs?

✔️Teeth Grinding
✔️Tongue Thrust
✔️Tongue and Cheek Ties
✔️Poor Chewing Skills
✔️Thumb Sucking or Other Oral Habits
✔️Jaw Issues
✔️Open Mouth Posture
✔️Articulation Errors

WHEN SHOULD TREATMENT START?
It’s never too late to correct and implement good oral-facial habits. Both children and adults can benefit from myo-functional therapy. A comprehensive or facial myofunctional evaluation, with a trained myofunctional therapist is the first step. Myofunctional treatment, when incorporated as a multidisciplinary approach, can correct, reeducate, and retrain functional skills for an improved quality of life. 👏🏻

Trained professionals may include but are not limited to myofunctional therapists, dentists, orthodontists, and/or ENTs.🥼
