Yesterday, I encapsulated my last placenta. As simple as that sentence is, it carries far more emotion than I ever expected. It marks the closing of a chapter that has shaped my life in countless ways and leaves me with a heart full of gratitude.
After much prayer and discernment, I've made the difficult decision to close my doula practice as our family relocates to Kansas. While this season of birth work is coming to an end, I know it's because God is calling our family into a new season of life.
When I first began this journey, I never could have imagined where it would lead. What started as a desire to support mothers and families grew into something far greater than I ever dreamed.
Over the years, I have had the incredible honor of serving many families through birth support, postpartum care, placenta encapsulation, education, and encouragement. Over 300 placentas encapsulated and 91 births. I've witnessed tiny first cries, tearful first embraces, and the incredible strength of women bringing new life into the world. Each family entrusted me with one of the most intimate moments of their lives, and that trust has never been lost on me.
God, in His perfect timing, has one more birth planned for me before this chapter closes. At the end of August, I'll make the trip back to Oklahoma to support one final family. That sweet baby will be my 92nd doula birth, and I can't help but smile knowing that my last birth in this season will be exactly where my heart has always loved to be, at a homebirth. Birth work has changed me in ways I can't fully put into words. It has strengthened my faith, taught me humility, shown me incredible resilience, and reminded me over and over again that God is so often present in the quiet, sacred moments that change us forever.
As difficult as it is to step away, I also know that God is calling me into a new season. I'll soon begin a position as a Hospice Team Coordinator. At first glance, birth work and hospice may seem worlds apart, but I don't see them that way.
One calling welcomed new life into the world. The next will walk alongside families as loved ones prepare for eternal life. Both are sacred. Both require compassion, presence, and the willingness to simply be with people during life's most profound transitions.
To every mother, baby, partner, midwife, nurse, physician, photographer, and fellow birth worker who has been part of this journey: Thank you. Thank you for trusting me, encouraging me, teaching me, and allowing me to witness miracles unfold again and again.
I don't know what the future holds. Maybe one day, when my own children are grown and this season of motherhood has changed, God will lead me back to birth work. If He does, I will embrace it with the same love and gratitude that I have today.
But for now, my calling is here.
This isn't goodbye forever. It's simply "see you later."
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your stories. It has truly been one of the greatest honors of my life. ❤️
