☀️ Hot Weather + Lithium = Be Extra Careful! 💊
If you take lithium for bipolar disorder or another mental health condition, summer heat can increase your risk of lithium toxicity.
When it's hot outside, you lose water and sodium through sweat. Dehydration can cause lithium levels in your body to rise—even if you're taking the same dose.
🚨 Watch for these warning signs: • New or worsening tremors (shaking) • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea • Increased drowsiness or extreme fatigue • Dizziness • Muscle weakness • Unsteady walking or poor coordination • Slurred speech • Confusion or difficulty thinking clearly • Blurred vision
⚠️ Severe toxicity is a medical emergency and can cause seizures, loss of consciousness, abnormal heart rhythms, or coma.
✅ How to stay safe this summer: 💧 Drink plenty of fluids, especially if you're sweating. 🧂 Don't drastically change your salt intake unless instructed by your provider. 🌞 Limit prolonged exposure to extreme heat. 🤒 Contact your healthcare provider if you develop vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever. 💊 Never stop or adjust your lithium dose without medical advice. 🩸 Keep up with recommended lithium blood level checks.
❗If you develop severe symptoms or think you may have lithium toxicity, seek emergency medical care immediately.
At NCC Psychiatric Services PLLC, your safety is our priority. If you're taking lithium and have questions about staying safe during the summer months, contact your provider before problems arise.
