🐻 Black Bear Activity Reported Near Lead

The City of Lead would like to make residents aware that a black bear has recently been reported on the outskirts of Lead in the Kirk area. In addition, there have been multiple bear sightings reported throughout the area in recent weeks.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take precautions to avoid attracting bears into neighborhoods:

• Keep garbage securely contained and stored whenever possible.
• Do not leave pet food, bird seed, or other attractants outdoors.
• Clean outdoor grills after use.
• Be aware of your surroundings when walking, hiking, or recreating outdoors.

Black bears are generally not aggressive toward people, but they can become accustomed to human food sources if attractants are readily available. Taking simple preventative measures helps keep both residents and wildlife safe.

If you encounter a bear, remain calm, give it plenty of space, and do not approach it. Please report any bear sightings to the Lead Police Department at (605) 584-1615.
