WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
by Robert Asbridge, DOM

"Every practitioner who stays long enough reaches the same recognition: We are not, in the end, only in the business of points and herbal prescriptions.

We practice a medicine of attention. In a problem-coded world, an unhurried hour in which a person is truly listened to can be the most therapeutic thing they meet all week.

People will go on suffering in ways no treatment fully reaches, and they will go on needing someone willing to sit close and stay until they are no longer alone in it.

After 23 years in practice, I remember faces more than treatments. I remember how often someone came in for a sore back or a stubborn headache and, somewhere in the quiet of the treatment room, said something they had not planned to say; something with little to do with the complaint that brought them in and everything to do with why they were really there.

I think of a veteran I treated years ago. He came in limping, complaining of a bad back that just would not quit; years of hard carrying, he said. His pulse was rapid, a little wiry. We talked through the usual things: sleep, diet, the morning ache. Needles went into the ears, abdomen and a few distal points on the legs, and the room went quiet. Then, his eyes still closed, he said, “It’s not really the back. Not anymore.”

For the next 20 minutes he told me about a man he had served with overseas, long ago, and could not save; a grief he had carried alone for years, lodged in his body like shrapnel. When the needles came out, his shoulders had dropped. The limp was still there, but something heavier had shifted. He looked at me with wet eyes and said, “I think I can breathe again.” The needles had not removed the memory. They had made room for it to be witnessed.

It happened that way more times than I can count, with people who had come in for something else entirely: a knee, a migraine, an ache they could not place. The complaint was the door; what walked through it, once the room went quiet, was the thing they had carried alone. The words were always different. The relief that followed was always the same. None of this made the body’s pain less real; easing it was honest, sufficient work, and for many that was the whole of what they needed.

I used to think the treatment began when I chose the points and herbs. Eventually I came to believe it began the moment another person felt safe enough to tell the truth. The needles and herbs did real work, but they were rarely the thing that mattered most.

Every practitioner who stays long enough reaches the same recognition: We are not, in the end, only in the business of points and herbal prescriptions. We practice a medicine of attention. In a problem-coded world, an unhurried hour in which a person is truly listened to can be the most therapeutic thing they meet all week.

Over the years I came to think that our task is less to impose healing than to clear what stands in its way. The needle is an invitation. The herb is an invitation. So is the unhurried question. We are not the source of the healing; we are its witnesses and, now and then, its catalysts.

That lesson did not stay in the clinic. When I retired from practice, I did not retire from the work; I only changed rooms. I coach now, young athletes, and I keep company with the dying as a hospice volunteer. Acupuncture, coaching, the bedside: I have come to see them as three dialects of one language, each a way of helping a person reconnect with their own vitality at the moment they most need it.

I am writing this at a hard hour for our profession. Schools are closing. Graduates carry debt the field struggles to justify. We are still fighting, decades on, to be recognized, reimbursed, and integrated, and the fight is wearing. A younger practitioner could be forgiven for wondering whether they chose a vanishing path. I won’t pretend those pressures aren’t real or that good people aren’t being hurt by them.

But I want to say something to the colleague who is tired and unsure, because I wish someone had said it plainly to me. We are defending one of the last places in healthcare where a person is met as a whole human being. And that work, once it is in you, does not stop at the edge of the clinic. It follows you all the way to the end.

I know this because of where it has led me. In hospice, I sit with people in their final hours; often past speaking, past hearing in any ordinary way. There is no pulse worth reading then, no point to choose, no herb to prescribe. There is nothing left to fix at all – only the willingness to be present. And so I lean close to their ear and whisper the one truth no treatment of mine ever could: Everything is OK. You can go now.

That is the medicine with everything stripped away: no needles, no herbs, no theory, no name for the technique. Only one person, staying with another, to the end. It was the medicine when I began, with a needle in my hand. It is the medicine now, when I hold nothing at all.

So, when I hear it said that our profession may be fading, I understand the worry, but I cannot share it. The schools may shrink, the very name may not outlast us. But people will go on suffering in ways no treatment fully reaches, and they will go on needing someone willing to sit close and stay until they are no longer alone in it. That need has outlived every system that ever tried to replace it. It will outlive our fear of disappearing, too.

That is the work. It is reason enough to keep showing up. It always was."

After more than two decades in clinical practice, retired practitioner Robert Asbridge reflects on the deepest, most transformative dimension of healing: the medicine of undivided attention. Looking back over thousands of patient encounters, Asbridge recounts how physical complaints—such as...

Dear beloved community,

We are only a few weeks away from my sabattical!

I still have openings through Friday, October 30th, if you need support - acupuncture, herbal medicine, or astrology, please reach out. I love serving my community and would love the opportunity to support you as the snow begins to fly!

The Two Roots Acupuncture office will remain open with other healing practitioners during my sabbatical. I’m still in the process of securing one more tenant, but in the meantime, I wanted to share some of my highest-recommended local resources with you.

Healing really becomes thriving when we make it a way of living. Your health and wellness will always be important, and just like a garden, your needs will ebb and flow with the seasons. Trust the times when you feel called to pause, listen, and tend to your mind-body-soul-spirit, even before a need to or have to arises. There’s a saying in Eastern medicine: “If you wait to dig the well until you’re thirsty, it is too late.”

When we’re thriving, we have an opportunity to attune to the subtlest messages from our bodies. In doing so, we learn to become faithful companions to the magical mystery that has kept us alive all this time, in ways we will never fully understand.

In mythology, there is a mythical creature named Chiron who is known as the “wounded healer,” a centaur who is half-man (or woman) and half-horse. This image gives us the awareness of our animal body guiding the movement of our human mind...and reveals a creature with two hearts. I love the reminder that our bodies are living, breathing beings, deserving of our care and respect. When we begin to relate to our bodies as living beings rather than something to fix or push through, we return to aligned relationship with the wisdom they hold. What might the image of the centaur and the horse's wisdom evoke in you? All healing, is an invitation into deeper relationship with ourselves.

Let yourself enjoy the practice of coming home to yourself, again and again. The more we listen and respond to the quieter messages of our bodies, the more opportunity we have to tend to what needs our attention before it becomes impossible to ignore. And in that relationship, we begin to experience the bounty of listening, giving, and receiving through our own sacred vessels.

While I’m away, I invite you to explore some new resources and trust your body’s wisdom along the way. Not every medicine or every healer is meant for us, but we can be surprised by what we discover when we stay connected to curiosity. Perhaps this window of time is just the opportunity to try something new, deepen your relationship with yourself, or discover a form of healing you might not otherwise have explored.

Please find local resources below, and reach out to the practitioners directly with any questions about their offerings or availability.

We are so lucky to have such a wealth of healing resources here in our valley! Many of the resources listed below, I personally use for my own wellness, healing, expansion, and growth.

For acupuncture-specific care, see the acupuncture practitioners listed below. There are other acupuncturists throughout the Arkansas River Valley, from Leadville to Salida, but these are my top three recommendations.

And if you’re curious about exploring new healing modalities, check out Irene Doherty, who will be practicing at Two Roots Acupuncture, along with the other local alternative healing providers listed below — including a new Ayurvedic practitioner here in Buena Vista!

With gratitude,

Jaya

"Instructions before visiting earth" by James McRae

--------------

"That which died falls not out of the Universe. " - Marcus Aurelius

Harvest season forces us to recognize when tending has become holding on. We cannot take the whole field through the gate of autumn. We can only take what will feed us, save the seed, abs watch all else become compost.

Everything in life transforms, change is the only constant.

------------

Autumn Equinox exact at 6:06pm when darkness returns as an equal lover to light.

Equal does not mean Same.

Blessings 🍂

We've never experienced THIS autumn... may we be more radiantly alive and authentically expressed than ever before. May we listen to the Earth, her seasons and cycles and trust we're in flow.

May we know peace on the journey.

Words do no justice to the magic of last night.

Thank you to all the souls who said Yes.

The New Earth is not something we will arrive at. It is something we are creating every breath we become more fully who we are: heart-centered beings of radiant light, children of Earth and Stars, here for a moment... with our greatest gift, an act of beingness, for ourselves and all relations...especially the more than human world.

How do we listen?
How do we speak?
How do we presence?

And if you're waiting for permission to use your voice, remember no bird or creature ever asked anyone if it could play its song.

The world needs you Living, speaking, being from your Heart.

The tongue is its root... may all that resonates within be shared as vibrational medicine without, mat we allow the light of our souls to show us the way.

May we walk in beauty
And remember our song 🎵

-----------------

"Blessed we are to dance on this ground
With the rythmn of saints to carry the sound
We hold a prayer for the Earth
And the ones yet to come

Remember why you came here
Remember your life is sacred"

There are things in life we can learn about intellectually, but there are other medicines we can only receive through our own vessel's lived experience and those are some of my favorites.

No one can eat for you. No one can move your body for you. No one can say yes to the life you are being called toward for you.

It requires discipline, commitment, courage, and curiosity.

But the rewards of traveling roads we could experience no other way are phenomenal.

We can read about the Grand Canyon for the rest of our lives, but no photograph or description can replace the awe of watching sunrise move slowly across its walls - the shifting light, the quiet, the river, the wildlife. At some point, we have to go.

Standing on the sidelines can teach us a lot. But it cannot substitute for participating in our own lives.

And what are we doing here, if not learning how to co-create with life? To experience the fullness of who we are? To discover what we're made of?
This is the medicine I am carrying with me into this next season - and the medicine I have been practicing in my own life.

I attended a drum-making ceremony this past weekend, and as we wove each knot, we called in all of our relations. When we tied the handle at the center of the drum, it became a reminder that we are at the center of everything we do.

Not the center as in the center of the universe.

The center as in the place from which we participate.

When we are centered in our hearts, in our vibrancy, our radiance, our aliveness - we don't keep that medicine to ourselves. We offer it back into the field of relationship, into the lives and ecosystems our souls are here to tend.

I invite you to notice the ways you are courageously stewarding your own sacred life force.

May we keep choosing the roads we can only travel for ourselves.

May we keep saying yes to the life that is calling us.

And may we remember that we don't have to wait until we have it all figured out to begin participating.

Our soul song is already in us.

We just have to be brave enough to sing it into existence.

This past weekend I presented a talk at the University of Denver for the second annual Colorado Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Expo hosted by CCMU. A whole-person, whole health & community wellness initiative.

My closing presentation for the three day event, was on "The Garden of Humanity" - highlighting the power of our Hearts and Spirits to inform our blueprint of consciousness. No matter how disconnected, dis-eased, or separated we may feel, we always have access to our hearts and the medicine of the earth. When we tend our inner ecosystem and nourish the essential life force within, instead of battling against the pain - this stewardship of heart consciousness becomes the blueprint for how we relate to ourselves, our relationships and our world.

You were born with a system of intelligence that is always seeking to redirect you to a state of balance, wholeness, and health. The same wisdom of intelligence that pulses through the stars, the ocean, the forests, and all life on earth.

Everytime one person becomes more resilient, more peaceful, more self-trusting, and more able to live from the truth of who they are, that change becomes part of the larger human story.

As within, so without.

The drum is the Heart Beat 💓

I gathered this weekend in ceremony and in community as we came together to heal the hoop. We sat in circle, we shed our tears, we shared our stories, we laughed, and we stayed present to the mystery of Now - a sea of what was and what's yet to come.

Thank you Andrew & Monica Drumming Sounds for guiding us through a journey of rythmn, connection, curiosity, and remembering. And for helping us to become more intimate with the land, the animals and our own hearts as we became intimate with the skins and sinews of the animals that blessed our hoop and connect us with all of our relations. We now honor the animal we walk with through each intentional drum beat we offer to the collective human song.

May we walk in beauty ✨️

If you would love to experience your own traditional frame drum building journey, comment your enthusiasm below so we can invite Andrew and Monica to share their gifts with us in Buena Vista!

I'll be speaking at the Colorado Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Expo at the University of Denver in a couple of weeks Colorado Chinese Medicine University.

CCMU's second annual whole-person, health & community wellness initiative.

This is a cause I am deeply supportive of: a gathering of colleagues and the general public, to come together and collectively influence a New Consciousness and New Earth rooted in authentic well-being.

When we care deeply for ourselves we remember how to care deeply for the Earth.

Modern healthcare often approaches healing as a battlefield - identifying symptoms, fighting disease, and searching for solutions. While these approaches have their place, lasting wellbeing invites a different relationship: one of stewardship.

Through the lens of Traditional East Asian Medicine, ecology, and whole-person wellness, my presentation explores healing as the cultivation of conditions in which life naturally flourishes. Participants will discover how the quality of care we learn to offer ourselves becomes the blueprint for how we care for all relationships: our loved ones, our communities, and the living world.

"As above, so below,
As within, so without".

By shifting from a paradigm of fixing to one of tending, attendees will leave with an ecological framework for understanding health as a living ecosystem - one that supports greater resilience, deeper connection, and sustainable healing from the inside out.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world."

When humanity remembers that we too are a garden, both individually and collectively, we can return as rightful stewards to the Garden of Earth.

So grateful for my community, and for friendships that sprout in the most unexpected places.

When you pluck a flower... the wisdom of the plant's lifeforce propagates more. As long as conditions are present for growth (sun, water, the 'right' season).

The environment creates the conditions... but the plant doesn't have to 'learn' or be taught what to do. Maybe that's true for our wisdom nature too...

Maybe we're too hard on ourselves when we fail to fully express in conditions that weren't able to support our lifeforce to begin with.

Dedicated to nourishing my soul's soil - excited to see what blooms.

And with devotion will continue to plant seeds of Love in this world and in the hearts of those I journey with, even if just for a moment, and even if I'm not around to enjoy the harvest.

And may I know my tears water this ecosystem of Love. Maybe that's why hearts break...so more love can exist in the world.

May Human consciousness become safe harbor through safe community - may we remember the Earth is our home.
