A Medicare-certified provider is a doctor, hospital, or supplier approved by Medicare to provide services to beneficiaries. As you review Medicare coverage, you'll see this phrase frequently: the coverage is in effect ONLY "if the provider is Medicare-certified and accepts Medicare assignment." What this really means is that Medicare will NOT pay its portion of covered services if you use a provider that is not Medicare-certified. Watch for this to make sure you don't end up paying more out of pocket.

The bottom line: Always confirm participation before scheduling services.

In Medicare, creditable coverage means your existing prescription drug coverage is expected to pay, on average, at least as much as Medicare’s standard Part D coverage.

Why it matters:
If you have creditable drug coverage and delay enrolling in Part D, you can usually avoid a late enrollment penalty later.

Employers or other plans outside of Medicare are required to notify you each year whether your coverage is creditable.
