Why In-Home Speech Therapy May Be More Effective Than Clinic-Based Therapy

When most people think of speech therapy, they picture a clinic room filled with toys and materials.

But communication doesn't happen in a therapy room.

Children communicate while asking for snacks in the kitchen, requesting help with toys in the living room, participating in bath time routines, and interacting with family members throughout the day.

That's one of the reasons I chose to build Speechie Auntie as an exclusively in-home speech therapy practice.

In-home speech therapy allows intervention to occur where communication naturally happens, while also giving Caregivers the opportunity to learn strategies in real time and carry them over throughout the week.

In my newest blog post, I discuss:
✅ Why home-based therapy often improves carryover of skills
✅ The benefits of caregiver coaching during sessions
✅ How natural routines create meaningful communication opportunities
✅ When clinic-based therapy may still be a good fit

If you're wondering whether in-home speech therapy might be right for your child, I'd love for you to take a look.

Does AAC count as screen time?

This is one of the most common questions I hear from parents when we start discussing AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).

The short answer: No. AAC is communication, not entertainment.
While many AAC systems are used on tablets or speech-generating devices, children use AAC to:

✔️ Express wants and needs
✔️ Participate in conversations
✔️ Ask for help
✔️ Share ideas and feelings
✔️ Build language skills

Using an AAC device is much more similar to talking, writing, or signing than it is to watching YouTube or playing games.

I recently wrote a new blog post explaining why speech-language pathologists do not consider AAC use to be recreational screen time, along with answers to some of the most common questions families ask about AAC.

I came prepared for “Five Little Speckled Frogs” or “Five Little Monkeys Swinging in a Tree."

My little guy had other plans and requested Post Malone’s “Sunflower” instead.

That’s one of my favorite parts of pediatric speech therapy. Following a child’s interests is often where the best engagement, connection, and communication happens. Sometimes language therapy looks like nursery rhymes, and sometimes it looks like singing Post Malone together in a living room.

When children lead, they get the language they need.

Parents ask me this more than you might think:

“Do speech therapists use ChatGPT?”

The honest answer? Yes, I do use it as a support tool.

Here’s the thing, though:
AI can generate words.
It cannot replace clinical judgment, human connection, experience, play skills, therapeutic relationships, or the ability to truly understand a child.

I wrote a new blog post about how I use AI tools like ChatGPT within my pediatric speech therapy private practice, and why clinical expertise will always remain the foundation.

This one is a little different than my usual posts, but it felt like an important conversation to have openly and honestly as AI becomes more common in healthcare and education.

If you’ve ever wondered whether AI could replace speech therapy, this is for you.

Can AI replace a speech therapist? A pediatric SLP in Leander and Cedar Park shares how tools like ChatGPT may support efficiency, while clinical expertise, human connection, and individualized care remain the foundation of speech therapy.

Hoping turning 6 still means balloons, cake, birthday presents, and a very excited speech therapist are considered cool and not totally lame.

Consistency matters so much in speech therapy, especially for toddlers and preschoolers. Progress often happens through small, repeated moments week after week through play, connection, caregiver support, and everyday routines.

In this blog, I’m sharing why consistent speech therapy can help children build trust, participate more comfortably, practice communication skills over time, and carry those skills into daily life at home.

Speechie Auntie, PLLC provides play-based, in-home pediatric speech therapy for families in Leander, Cedar Park, and nearby areas.

Quick PSA if you have an ARD meeting coming up:

What’s offered at school can look very different from what your child might actually need. A lot of families don’t realize that until they’re sitting in the meeting. If you want a clearer understanding before you go in, I wrote something that walks through it in a really straightforward way.

Can you bring a private speech therapist to an ARD meeting in Texas? Learn how it works and how it can help your child’s communication needs.

Getting your child assessed for developmental delays isn’t something to feel ashamed of. It’s simply a way to better understand and support them. Every child grows in their own time, and reaching out for guidance when you have concerns is an act of care and love. Small steps early on can make a big difference in helping them feel confident and supported.

A little peek into a birthday-themed session done right.

In early intervention, we’re not just teaching words, we’re building the foundation that makes words possible.

Play, routines, and meaningful experiences (like birthdays) are some of the most powerful ways to support communication.

If you’re in Leander or Cedar Park and wondering what speech therapy could look like for your toddler, this is it!

Feeding Fact

Every time your child sees, touches, or smells a food, their brain is learning:

“This is safe.”

Even if they don’t eat it.
Even if they just look at it.
Even if they push it away.

That still counts 🤍

Progress with selective eating isn’t just about taking a bite. It’s about building comfort first.
