Mast cells are immune cells that live in your skin, gut, and airways. When they sense a threat, they release histamine and other chemicals — that’s what drives itching, flushing, congestion, and gut symptoms. This is normal and protective.
The issue is when they fire too easily, too often.
Mast cells sit in close contact with peripheral nerves. They communicate directly — nerves can signal mast cells, and mast cells can signal nerves back.
Your autonomic nervous system has two main modes: sympathetic (“stress”) and parasympathetic (“rest”). When the system spends prolonged time in a sympathetic-dominant state, that ongoing signaling can lower the threshold at which nearby mast cells activate. In other words, a nervous system stuck in stress mode can make an already-reactive alarm even more sensitive.
That’s the layer we focus on: supporting nervous system regulation so the body isn’t running in constant defense.
