Hello walkers of Lebanon!

If you missed our August walk, you missed our talk on GLP-1s, the weekly injectable medication that's all the buzz for weight loss these days. Originally FDA-approved and marketed for treatment of type 2 diabetes, these meds have quickly become one of the most sought after medications in the country, both in clinics and online, mostly for weight loss. These medications are also FDA-approved for prevention of heart attacks in people with heart disease, to slow progression of chronic kidney disease; as treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, and for advanced liver fibrosis. There are also emerging studies to show their effectiveness as adjunct therapies for knee arthritis, depression, and addiction, among other things. Holy cow, it seems like these drugs can do anything. But like any medications, they have their side effects, which are not insignificant, as well as their detractors. Always consult with your primary care provider if you are considering using these meds.

Next walk is Saturday, September 19th at 10am at Union Canal Tunnel Park. Hope to see you there!

Be Well.

Hello walking friends of Lebanon! I'm so excited for our next walk this Saturday, July 18th, when we will welcome Shannon McMinn, Executive of Compeer of Lebanon County, as our guest speaker. Social isolation is harmful for all of us, and even more so for people living with mental illness. I'm excited for Shannon to share her stories of how Compeer is addressing this need here in Lebanon County through the healing power of friendship, connectedness, and belonging.

We'll see you Saturday, July 18th at 10am at Union Canal Tunnel Park!

Hello, walkers of Lebanon! I hope you all enjoyed your Independence Day celebrations despite the challenges that Mother Nature gave us.

June's talk focused on Alzheimer's prevention. Our genes dictate the fate of our brains to a certain degree, but there is much we can do to forestall cognitive decline. Number one on the list: Regular Exercise! Moving our bodies and getting our hearts pumping increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Other things we can do to prolong the sharpness of our minds: Eat nutritious food; avoid sugary foods and drinks and processed foods (like sugar-sweetened cereals, fruit-flavored yogurts, cookies, chips, etc); stay socially active with friends and the community; prioritize getting 7-9 hours of sleep; limit alcohol; and treat hearing loss, as it helps you to stay socially engaged and keeps the hearing part of your brain working. Those crossword puzzles you've been encouraged to do to keep your mind intact? They may be fun to do, but they don't actually help for Alzheimer's protection, as they simple test info that you already know, but don't actually contribute to new neural connections in the brain, which is what we need to maintain mental sharpness. Instead, try out new activities that challenge your brain in different ways, like learning a new language, taking a painting or ceramics class, learning how to play an instrument, or learning to cook -- better still if you do these things with others to stay socially engaged at the same time! And when you retire, don't retire to your couch! Some studies show that the rate of brain degeneration speeds up after retirement. Stay active in the community through volunteer work or other brain-stimulating activities.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our July walk, on Saturday, July 18th at 10am at Union Canal Tunnel Park. Until then, Be Well.

Our June walk is coming up this Saturday, June 20th at 10am at Union Canal Tunnel Park. If you've been planning on joining us, make this your month!

Thank you to my awesome sister, Gloria Horn Tice, who was our guest speaker at May's walk, talking about the health benefits of music. If you missed it, I know she would love to chat with you and get you up to tempo on any other upcoming walk!

Throwing in a few photos of our walks along the California coast last week just for fun and some added inspiration. πŸ™‚

Hope to see you on Saturday! πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸŒŠπŸŽΌ
