More time outside means more chances to spot poison ivy and poison oak! 🌞 🌱

As kids spend more time exploring trails, parks, and backyards this summer, remember: "Leaves of three, let them be."

Kristin Morgan, DNP, MSN, APRN, shares that for some people, poison ivy can trigger an allergic skin reaction. If contact occurs, wash the area promptly with soap and water. Ice, hydrocortisone cream, and antihistamines can help ease the itch.

The RICE method is a trusted approach for managing common musculoskeletal injuries, whether sports-related or not. Kieth Loud, MD, MSc breaks down what the method means.

R – Relative Rest: remain active within pain-free limits
I – Ice: apply for 20 minutes at a time, no more than once per hour
C – Compression: supports swelling control
E – Elevation: helps reduce swelling by lifting the injured area

🏈 For most of his high school football career, Liam was playing through pain. Sore knees, morning stiffness, and swelling that just wouldn’t go away. He pushed through, assuming it was just part of the game.

But by the end of his junior year, the pain had become impossible to ignore. Liam and his family turned to Dartmouth Health Children’s for answers, where our pediatric rheumatology team diagnosed him with juvenile arthritis linked to Lyme disease he contracted as a child.

After starting treatment, everything changed. The pain began to fade within weeks, and by his senior season, Liam was back on the field feeling stronger than ever. He finished the season with 750 total yards and 10 touchdowns in just eight games, earning First Team All-State honors.

Now, Liam will take the field once again at the 14th Annual Dartmouth Health Children’s All-Star Football Game on June 26, benefiting medical care and vital programs for the kids and families of Dartmouth Health Children’s and the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (CHaD). We couldn’t be prouder to cheer him on.

Did you know facility dogs are trained to use a soft mouth? That means we learn to hold and carry objects gently without chewing or puncturing them.

Soft mouth is an important skill that helps us safely interact with comfort items, toys, and other materials we use while supporting patients and families.

When Lexi’s mom went into labor nearly 3 months early due to an infection, she was rushed to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Lexi was born weighing just 2 pounds, 8 ounces, and spent her first weeks fighting to grow stronger in our Intensive Care Nursery (ICN).

After a brief transfer closer to home, Lexi’s condition worsened, and our DHART helicopter team flew her back to the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (CHaD), where specialists cared for her through every step of her recovery. After nine weeks in the hospital, Lexi was finally able to go home and continued to grow stronger with years of follow-up care and support.

Today, Lexi is a varsity cheer captain, all-star competitor, and coach to younger athletes who look up to her every day.

This year, she'll be cheering on the sidelines at the 14th Annual Dartmouth Health Children's All-Star Football Game on June 26th, benefiting medical care and vital programs for the kids and families of Dartmouth Health Children’s and the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (CHaD), the same hospital that helped save her life.

At Dartmouth Health Children's Manchester, one of the many ways I help out is by supporting children in the Child Advocacy and Protection Program (CAPP). The CAPP team works together to care for and support children and families during difficult situations, helping make sure kids feel safe, heard, and supported. I do my part by bringing comfort, calm, and a friendly presence to help make tough days a little easier

Here’s how I help in those moments:
• I stay close for comfort
• We practice deep breathing (slow, calming breaths)
• I help distract during stressful moments
• I’m a steady, friendly buddy when things feel big or overwhelming
