PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT...XXOO
Many of you have heard about and have been impacted by the nationwide shortage of ESTRADIOL PATCHES for hormone replacement therapy. It's creating so much extra work for you at home and for us in the offices, in fact, several hours just on this issue each and every day. All doses of the patch are impacted at this point.
Below are some tips to navigating the shortage as we have no idea when it will catch up to current standards.
1. If your personal pharmacy is out of your dose and frequency patch you can do several things. Call other pharmacies within a reasonable distance to see if they have your patch in stock, if they do ask your pharmacy to transfer the prescription. If they decline then reach out to us asap.
2. Ask if any pharmacy has your dose and an alternative frequency either twice weekly or once weekly in stock and same as above.
3. Check w/ your mail order company, many have had success with this.
4. IF no patches are available there is a gel that you apply daily that we can prescribe, as close to your patch dose as possible, keeping in mind that absorption is different.
5. No luck yet, you can have your specific prescription made into a compounded cream by a compounding pharmacist. Not covered by your insurance but in a pinch it will do.
6. Last ditch effort, if no patches/gel/cream are to be had, we can temporarily transition you to an oral pill form. This is not preferred because the oral estradiol is metabolized in your liver increasing clotting factors putting you at risk for blood clots, stroke, heart attack.
Good luck, we finally have the correct data/information at hand regarding how beneficial HRT is and now we can't access it!
