Prescription medications can play an important role in care — but when they’re misused or no longer needed, knowing how to handle them safely matters.

Learn more below about prescription drug classes that are commonly misused, including opioids, stimulants and central nervous system depressants.

Another way you can help is by safely disposing of medications you no longer need. On Saturday, Oct. 24, join HCA Midwest Health for our prescription drug take back day event: https://bit.ly/4zDzvEY.

50+ years. More than 670,000 meals. Countless moments of connection.

Since 1974, Lee’s Summit Medical Center and Meals on Wheels have worked together to serve our neighbors, providing nutritious meals and something equally meaningful — a friendly face, personal connection and reassurance.

Our Chief Executive Officer Gabe Clements and Chief Operating Officer Alex Villegas were honored to join this year’s Volunteer Appreciation event to recognize the dedicated volunteers who make this impact possible. Their service is a powerful reminder that caring for our community extends far beyond the walls of our hospital.

We’re proud of a partnership built on decades of service, compassion and connection, and grateful to everyone helping build a healthier, more connected community, one meal and one neighbor at a time.

To all our emergency nurses, thank you for the expertise and steady presence you bring to every shift and every patient you serve.

That’s why HCA Midwest Health is joining HCA Healthcare facilities across the country to help make safe medication disposal more accessible. In partnership with our local police department, we’re hosting our take back day event on Saturday, Oct. 24: https://bit.ly/4rSiB2t.

During Physician Assistant Week, HCA Midwest Health joins our broader HCA Healthcare network to recognize the important role physician assistants (PAs) play in caring for patients and supporting care teams.

Across specialties and care settings, PAs bring clinical knowledge, collaboration and compassion to the patient care experience. Whether conducting physical exams, helping guide treatment plans or supporting follow-up care, they work closely with physicians and colleagues to provide high-quality, patient-centered care.

As part of HCA Healthcare, PAs collaborate with care teams across a network that supported approximately 47 million patient encounters in 2025 across 190 hospitals and 2,500 outpatient facilities — helping make care possible for patients, families and communities.

To all our PAs, thank you for the care, expertise and support you bring to patients, families and care teams.

Congratulations to Kalaa Thomas, an ER nurse with HCA Midwest Health and Healthtrust Workforce Solutions, for being honored as the September recipient of the Blue KC Answering the Call award at a recent Kansas City Royals game!

Kalaa became a nurse after making a promise to her mother, who died of breast cancer, that she would pursue a career in nursing. As an ER nurse, she has found purpose in helping people during some of their most vulnerable moments.

During COVID-19, Kalaa answered the call to serve in California, where the need for ER nurses was great. The experience took a heavy toll, and when she returned home, she realized she was still carrying the weight of what she had seen and experienced. Through The Battle Within, an organization that supports former military personnel and first responders coping with hidden trauma, Kalaa found support, healing and a path back to the work she loves. Today, she gives back as a mentor, helping others navigate their own healing journeys.

Please join us in congratulating Kalaa on this meaningful recognition and thanking her for the compassion, resilience and heart she brings to our community.
