Dr. Taormina represented the Missouri Board of Healing Arts at the Federation of State Medical Boards Annual Meeting in Baltimore, where he engaged in discussions focused on patient safety and regulatory oversight of diverse health professionals, addressing topics including artificial intelligence, Assistant Physician licensure, and physician burnout and wellness, with a notable presentation by Dr. Francis Collins, distinguished for leading the Human Genome project and formerly Director of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Taormina recently attended the Missouri State Medical Association meeting in St. Louis with his wife Stephanie, where he was elected Councilor for District 7, representing the Kansas City area, and received his 50-year MSMA service pin. During the meeting, he met with UMKC Medical School Dean Norbash, Dr. Warren Lovinger, Senator Joe Nicola, and Dr. Ravi Johar, Chief Medical Officer at United Health.

Amy brings more than 25 years of experience in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease care to MWGI.

Be aware of genetic diseases causing multiple colon polyps & early colon cancers !

Lynch syndrome is a common and often under-diagnosed inherited condition that increases one's risk for a variety of cancers, including colon, re**al, uterine, ovarian, urinary tract, and other malignancies.

In the general U.S. population, it is estimated that roughly 1 in 300 people have Lynch syndrome. Yet, the vast majority of individuals with Lynch syndrome are unaware of their diagnosis at present. For someone carrying a Lynch syndrome mutation, the lifetime risk of colore**al cancer is 22 to 74 percent, compared to a 4 to 5 percent risk in someone who does not carry a mutation. The risk of uterine cancer is 15 to 71 percent in women, compared to about 3 percent risk in those who do not carry a mutation. The lifetime risks of the other cancers associated with Lynch syndrome are also higher than the general population.

Increasing the awareness of the importance of getting screened for colon cancer is the goal ! So many options to get screened exist but colonoscopy remains the gold standard !

While feeding our beloved puffer this weekend- my finger was grabbed and bit HARD ! Almost like a horror movie the puffer hung on for about 15 seconds ( insert Dr Taormina screaming) - a little subungual hemorrhage but finger is intact - BEWARE THE PUFFER !

Heads up everyone!

If you had any doubts, many patients take photos of their medical concerns - body parts and stool to show to their doctors- stool photos are very common and are preferable to actual stool samples brought into the office , often in baggies, cups and other various containers. And you thought GI doctors lives were boring ! Surprises every day !
