Dissociation doesn't always look the way you'd expect.
You might know it as "spacing out,” but dissociation is a spectrum, and it shows up differently for every person. It's your mind's way of creating distance from something overwhelming. That can look like many things:
🔹 Feeling detached from your body- like you're watching yourself from the outside, an observer in your own life.
🔹 The world feeling unreal- surroundings seem foggy, dreamlike, or two-dimensional.
🔹 Memory gaps- arriving somewhere with no recall of the drive, or losing stretches of time.
🔹 Emotional numbness- feeling cut off from your emotions, even in moments that "should" feel big.
There's also identity confusion, intrusive detachment during conversations, and for some, more complex experiences like hearing internal voices or feeling like different "parts" of self are present at different times.
If any of this resonates, you're not alone, and you're not "crazy." Dissociation is a coping response, not a character flaw. Healing is possible with the right support. 💙
