Since the book, What Am I Thinking: Having a Baby After Postpartum Depression, came out in 2005, couples have been asking for The Postpartum Pact when they are preparing for a subsequent pregnancy. It provides a much-needed opportunity for partners to sit with some hard questions and engage in conversations that may be difficult to initiate on their own. It is also an invaluable tool to augment clinical assessment, helping clinicians gather information that might otherwise remain unspoken.

By encouraging mothers to identify what they needed but did not receive, what they received but did not need, and what they want their partners to understand this time around, the Pact not only gives clinicians a more complete picture of their previous experience and current needs, but also creates an opportunity for couples to communicate more clearly and intentionally with one another.
