Summer Safety: Prevent Heat Illness & Accidental Injuries
Never Leave a Child in a Vehicle
Even on mild days, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can become life-threatening within
minutes. Children overheat 3–5 times faster than adults.
Remember Every Time:
• Place your phone, purse, work bag, or one shoe in the back seat. This creates a 'back-seat check'
so you always open the rear door before locking the car.
• Lock parked vehicles. Children can climb into unlocked cars while playing and become trapped. A
locked vehicle prevents this preventable tragedy.
Heat Illness Prevention
• Offer water often.
• Take frequent shade breaks.
• Avoid strenuous activity from 10 AM–4 PM.
• Dress children in lightweight clothing.
• Never cover a stroller with a blanket because it traps heat.
Heat Stroke Warning Signs – Call 911
Confusion, difficulty waking, seizure, collapse, or temperature above 104°F (40°C). Begin cooling
immediately while waiting for EMS.
Firework Safety
• Attend professional displays whenever possible.
• Keep children away from lighting fireworks.
• Sparklers burn at nearly 2,000°F and can cause severe burns.
• Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
Water Safety
• Never leave children unattended around water—even for seconds.
• Stay within arm's reach of infants and toddlers.
• Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets while boating.
Burn Prevention
Turn pot handles inward, keep hot drinks away from children, and set your water heater to 120°F
(49°C) or below.
Outdoor Safety
Wear helmets for bikes and scooters, use sunscreen for children older than 6 months, use insect
repellent as directed, and seek shelter immediately if thunder is heard.
Have a Safe Summer!
Simple prevention saves lives. If your child develops signs of heat stroke, has a serious burn, nearly
drowns, or becomes difficult to wake, call 911 immediately.
