Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a relatively new branch of ABA. We have enjoyed learning about and incorporating ACT into our practice. We find that it is a good fit for what we do best; offer an "outside of the box" highly individualized approach to a variety of students.
What is ACT? ACT has its roots in Applied Behavior Analysis and Relational Frame Theory. ACT is also based on Functional Contextualism, which holds that all behaviors are designed to serve the best interest of the organism. When you put all of these theories together, you understand that the inner world of language and thought must be considered as a context that can initiate, reinforce, and shape a set of behaviors.
