It is not uncommon for teens to experience their emotions very intensely. As highlighted in the video, when emotions become intense, there is often an urge to do something connected with that feeling. Sometimes the urge might be to do something that ultimately makes them continue feeling overwhelmed or makes their problems bigger. It’s important for teens to know that intense emotions and the urges that come with them are common and they do not last forever. Teens can ride out intense feelings and urges by utilizing their five senses and different activities to ground them in the present and help them tolerate how they feel. Waiting for the intensity to pass also allows for greater control in choosing what they do next.

Encourage your high schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Everyone feels big and intense emotions sometimes.
2️⃣ Everyone has urges to act that are caused by big, intense, and uncomfortable emotions. The key is riding out the urge and waiting for big feelings to lessen.
3️⃣ Teens can ride the wave by utilizing their five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell) and by engaging in healthy distracting activities and being active (e.g., taking a walk, talking with friends, reading, and journaling).

🚨 New Study Alert 🚨

We know that fathers play an important role in child development, but did you know that they can play a role in promoting breastfeeding and practicing safe sleep?

A new study looked at how fathers can impact the initiation and duration of breastfeeding, as well as safe sleep practices. The study, conducted in Georgia (US), looked at 250 fathers’ attitudes, behaviors, and experiences before, during, and 2 to 6 months after their infant’s birth (Parker et al. 2023).

The study found that fathers who encouraged breastfeeding were more likely to have children who both initiated and continued breastfeeding at 8 weeks.

It also found that only 16% of fathers followed all 3 safe sleep practices recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics:
1️⃣ Placing the infant on their back to sleep
2️⃣ Using only approved sleep surfaces for infants
3️⃣ Avoiding soft bedding, blankets, and stuffed animals

Is your child’s ear hurting? It could be an ear infection. Children are more likely than adults to get ear infections. Some ear infections, such as middle ear infections, need antibiotic treatment, but many can get better without antibiotics. Talk to your child’s doctor about the best treatment and bookmark or save this post for future reference on symptoms, care, and who to contact.

In California, a high school teacher complains that students watch Netflix on their phones during class. In Maryland, a chemistry teacher says students use gambling apps to place bets during the school day.

Around the country, educators say students routinely send Snapchat messages in class, listen to music and shop online, among countless other examples of how smartphones distract from teaching and learning.

The hold that phones have on adolescents today is well-documented, but teachers say parents are often not aware to what extent students use them inside the classroom. And increasingly, experts are speaking with one voice on the question of how to handle it: Ban phones during classes.

“Students used to have an understanding that you aren’t supposed to be on your phone in class. Those days are gone,” said James Granger, who requires students in his science classes at a Los Angeles-area high school to place their phones in “a cellphone cubby” with numbered slots. “The only solution that works is to physically remove the cellphone from the student.”

Most schools already have rules regulating student phone use, but they are enforced sporadically.

Nationally, 77% of U.S. schools say they prohibit cellphones at school for non-academic use, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

But that number is misleading. It does not mean students are following those bans or all those schools are enforcing them.

A study last year from Common Sense Media found that 97% of kids use their phones during school hours, and that kids say school cellphone policies vary — often from one classroom to another — and aren’t always enforced.

For a ban to work, educators and experts say the school administration must be the one to enforce it and not leave that task to teachers. The Phone-Free Schools Movement, an advocacy group formed last year by concerned mothers, says policies that allow students to keep phones in their backpacks are ineffective.

The death of a parent is a difficult, traumatic event for any age to comprehend. The remaining parent is likely to be very upset, and showing sadness is fine. But choose a time when you feel you can share the news without feeling out of control of your emotions. Explain the death using developmentally appropriate words and make sure children know that they will still be taken care of. In the case of the death of a parent, no matter what the child’s age, professional counseling is often a good idea.
