🚌🚑 BACK TO SCHOOL: WHO HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY? 🚑🚌

School buses are back on the roads, so here’s a back-to-school question from Lehighton Ambulance Association:

What happens when an ambulance responding with lights and sirens meets a school bus with its red lights flashing?

🛑 The ambulance stops, too.

That’s right — in Pennsylvania, even an emergency vehicle must come to a complete stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm activated.

🚑 After coming to a complete stop, an emergency vehicle may proceed past the bus only after exercising due diligence and caution and ensuring it can do so without risking the safety of the students.

If an ambulance responding to an emergency has to stop for our kids, everyone else can too. 💙

As students head back to school, remember:

🚌 Flashing yellow lights: Slow down and prepare to stop.
🛑 Flashing red lights + stop arm: STOP at least 10 feet away.
🚸 Watch carefully for children — especially around bus stops and school zones.
🚑 If an emergency vehicle approaches, safely yield and allow it to pass — but never drive through a school bus’s red lights trying to get out of our way.

Lights and sirens mean someone needs us quickly. But no emergency is a reason to put another life in danger.

Recently, Lehighton Ambulance had the privilege to help our local fire departments as they battled a vehicle, garage, and house fire in West Penn Township. Our Rehab Unit was on scene for several hours providing hydration, nutrition, and cooling measures for the emergency responders.

We would also like to thank Jim Thorpe Police and the Jim Thorpe community for welcoming us to their National Night Out event this evening! Our crew members had a blast meeting with everyone providing community education and tours of the ambulance. We even managed to wrangle one of our paramedic students into the mix!!! 🎉

Lehighton Ambulance Association is proud to be participating in this year’s National Night Out in Nesquehoning, Jim Thorpe, and Palmerton!

National Night Out is an annual community event that brings neighbors, first responders, and local organizations together to strengthen relationships, promote public safety, and build safer, stronger communities.

Stop by to meet our crews, learn hands only CPR, get some goodies, check out the ambulances, ask questions, and say hello! We love the opportunity to connect with the communities we serve outside of emergency situations.

We look forward to seeing everyone tonight!

This past weekend, Lehighton Ambulance participated in Franklin Fire Company’s Block Party! While at the block party we taught Hands-Only CPR, gave tours of the ambulance, and also treated/transported some illnesses and injuries!!!

Earlier this week our crew had the opportunity to welcome Joe Snedeker to Carbon County twice during his charity ride to St. Joseph’s Center! Way to go Joe! Congratulations on completing your ride and raising so much!!! 🎉
