Why Nasal Breathing Matters
Breathing happens all day and all night, mostly without us thinking about it.
When the nasal airway is clear, the nose is designed to warm, humidify and filter incoming air before it reaches the lower airway.
Nasal breathing also works together with oral resting posture.
But when a child persistently breathes through their mouth, the answer isn’t simply to remind them to close it.
We need to ask:
Is nasal breathing comfortable?
Is there congestion or obstruction?
What is the tongue doing at rest?
Does mouth breathing also occur during sleep?
Mouth breathing is a pattern with possible underlying contributors—not a behavior to shame or repeatedly correct.
