Over the phone, he's got it handled. He's always got it handled.

Then you drive down in August and inside of an hour you've counted four things he never mentioned. The milk turned two weeks ago. There's a stack of second notices by the door. He touches the furniture crossing the room now. There's a bruise on his forearm and the explanation comes a little too fast.

He wasn't putting one over on you. Decline this slow is almost impossible to see from the inside, and anybody can hold it together for a ten-minute call.

August is when Texas families find out — because August is when we're finally standing in the kitchen instead of talking on the phone.

We put together a guide to what to look for on your next visit, what those signs usually mean, and how to bring it up without it going sideways. Including one thing worth checking this month in particular: whether the air conditioning is actually running, or whether he's been watching the bill.

Starting out our day with bang.

Families ask us about cost. About care levels. About whether he can bring his own recliner.

The question almost nobody asks out loud is the one that's actually keeping them up: what would he actually do all day?

So we wrote out an ordinary day. Not a highlight reel — a Tuesday in July.

Up at five-thirty with coffee if that's his habit, or nine if it isn't. Breakfast from a kitchen down the hall. A dominoes game that's been running three days. Everybody at one table for lunch, telling the same stories twice. Indoors with the fans going through the worst of the afternoon. The porch filling back up when the heat finally lets go. Somebody awake all night, so a bad night is never faced alone.

The part families never see coming is the friendships between the residents. You can visit your father every single day and still not be able to give him a peer — a man his own age who remembers the same music and the same weather. That only comes from living alongside other people.
