First of all, Happy Pride month and 6 year anniversary for ODCC! One of the many great ways to celebrate is to announce that we have a new student joining our team - Tamlin Coin! Secondly, if you are interested in meeting with Tamlin, they are accepting new clients and scheduling appointments. They are in need of experience and direct hours for their schooling. If you are interested in meeting with them, please contact us at [email protected] or (606) 776-6185 to get started.

Tamlin's Biography:
"My name is Tamlin Coin. I identify as genderfluid, bisexual, and polyamorous.
Pronouns: they/them

I’m currently working toward a Master of Education in Counseling with a graduate certificate in Trauma-Informed Counseling at Lindsey Wilson University, and I will be getting my clinical hours for my practicum and internships here at ODCC. I got my undergraduate degree at Berea College, where I studied Psychology with a minor in Studio Art and worked in the Student Craft center. After I graduated in 2023, I started working as a Substance Use Counselor at the outpatient MAT level of care. I very quickly fell in love with the work I was doing and knew I wanted to take it further, which was what led me to take the plunge into furthering my education and seeking out more credentials.

There’s a huge need for caring professionals who understand and empathize with marginalized populations. As someone who grew up impoverished, who’s experienced complex trauma, who lives with chronic mental and physical health conditions, and who’s faced discrimination personally and professionally, I want to be someone who can help fill that gap. I’m passionate about cultivating a therapeutic perspective informed by intersectionality, cultural humility, and social justice. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health, so I want to gain experience in a wide array of modalities during my training. In my role as a Substance Use Counselor, I’ve used a lot of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT, and I’ve started incorporating DBT principles, mindfulness, and somatic experiencing.

Some more about me: I’m originally from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. My partner and I have two cats. Some of my hobbies include drawing, painting, lacework tatting, gaming, and hiking."

Open Doors Counseling Center is welcoming a new therapist with over 25 years of experience - Roger Smith. Roger is an LCSW Supervisor who takes an approach to therapy that is influenced by solution-focused, trauma-informed, motivational interviewing, pastoral, and crisis interventions. Over the years, we have had several requests for pastoral, or faith-based, counseling. Roger's faith is important to him. At Open Doors, we acknowledge, treat, and disapprove of religious trauma/spiritual abuse while also welcoming, respecting, and honoring people who embrace spirituality. To be clear, Roger may incorporate spirituality into treatment with some clients who are wanting that, but he also respects the boundaries for those who do not. We are grateful to have Roger on our team. Please help me welcome him to ODCC!

"My name is Roger Smith. I identify as a gay male.
Pronouns: he/him

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years experience working in acute mental health with both adults and children. I employ a variety of therapy modalities with an emphasis in CBT skills, however interventions are influenced by solution focussed, trauma informed, motivational interviewing, pastoral and crisis intervention approaches.

My husband and I are from Hazard and Hyden in Eastern Kentucky, but relocating to Lexington. I have served on NAMI Kentucky Board of Directors in the past, and am a strong advocate for mental health and addressing the stigma so many of us face due to mental health issues. I personally live with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and understand the difficulties of making life successful with illness. My faith is very important to me, and I have had the personal struggles of living as a gay man who has been rejected by the “church” and more traditional family relationships. I am proof that God is bigger than our theology and that there can be reconciliation for “Whosoever”. I believe in meeting people where they are and helping them find the inner strength to become the person they were always meant to be, but just didn’t know how."

If you would like to schedule a session with Roger, please contact us at [email protected] or (606) 776-6185 to get started.

Details are still being discussed, but Open Doors Counseling Center will be collaborating with Medialex and JustFundKY on an on-air round table discussion with ODCC staff and other community members. We will be having conversations about complex topics facing the LGBTQIA+ community. We will be talking about mental health in the face of the current cultural landscape and how our community can care for itself and each other.

We plan to have up to 3 staff from ODCC and 4 people from the community who will join us for the discussions. Once we iron out the details more, I will post additional information. Watch for future announcements!

Open Doors Counseling is proud to welcome Roger Smith, LCSW (Supervisor), a seasoned behavioral health professional with nearly 25 years of direct experience in psychiatry and mental health care. Roger joins our team following a distinguished career with Appalachian Regional Hospital in Hazard, where he served in a leadership role overseeing psychiatric services and helping shape compassionate, effective care delivery across the region.

A native of the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, Roger brings not only clinical expertise but also a deep, personal understanding of the communities we serve. His work has long been grounded in the belief that access to quality behavioral health care is essential—especially for individuals and families in marginalized and underserved populations. He recognizes the unique challenges faced by those with limited access to care and is committed to meeting people where they are, both culturally and geographically.

Roger is now accepting new clients for therapy as well as comprehensive mental health assessments, including evaluations for diagnosis and program eligibility. He offers services through convenient Telehealth options, expanding access for individuals who may otherwise face barriers to receiving care.

At Open Doors Counseling, we are honored to have Roger as part of our mission-driven team. His dedication, experience, and compassion reflect our commitment to serving those who need it most—and to opening doors to healing, growth, and hope.

Please contact us at [email protected] or (606) 776-6185 to schedule with him.
