WHY HAVE A DOULA WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE YOUR HUSBAND, MOM, SISTER, OR BEST FRIEND?
Because there is a difference between someone who loves you and someone who is trained to support you through birth.
Your husband, mom, sister, or friend may know you better than anyone. They love you, want what is best for you, and can be an incredible source of comfort during labor.
But they may not know birth.
They may not know what is normal during labor, what positions may help when labor slows, comfort techniques for contractions, questions to ask when an intervention is suggested, or how quickly the atmosphere in a labor room can change.
And when someone you love is hurting, it can be difficult to think clearly. Your support person may be tired, worried, emotional, or simply unsure of what to do next.
That is where a doula comes in.
A doula isn't there to replace your husband or other support person. I'm there to support both of you.
I help you prepare your birth preferences ahead of time and, during labor, help you remember those preferences, understand your options, and find your voice when you're tired, hurting, or feeling overwhelmed.
If something is being suggested that wasn't part of your plan, I can help you slow the conversation down when medically appropriate and ask questions such as:
• Is this necessary right now?
• What are the benefits and risks?
• Are there alternatives?
• What happens if we wait?
• Can we have a few minutes to discuss it privately?
A doula does not make medical decisions for you or speak over you or your medical team. My job is to help make sure YOU remain an active participant in your birth.
Birth preferences aren't guarantees. Emergencies happen. Circumstances change. Sometimes the safest plan becomes different from the plan you originally wanted.
But when you and baby are doing well, you deserve to be treated with respect, have procedures explained to you, ask questions, give informed consent, and have your preferences taken seriously.
You are not just another patient in a room.
This is your body.
This is your baby.
This is your birth.
Your loved ones bring the love.
Your medical team brings clinical care.
Your doula brings continuous, knowledgeable support and helps you navigate the space between the two.
