I have heard many times from parents that their doctor told them the tie would stretch or resolve itself and that’s completely false. If it could stretch it wouldn’t be a tie. It would be a normal frenum. As for resolving itself, well not exactly. It’s true that in some cases babies learn to compensate or can alleviate symptoms with therapy and/or body work. But the tie itself doesn’t just resolve. If your tongue is tethered to your mandible it is impossible to have proper oral function. The question is, when and how will it be impactful. There are certainly folks who go their entire lives with very limited range of motion in their tongue and have no symptoms that they have connected to it. In other cases, a person’s symptoms can be so great and doesn’t improve much with therapy so it must be addressed.
I’m not the type of support provider who believes or recommends all ties be treated. What I do recommend is that if you and/or your baby are having ANY issues with feeding or things listed below, you seek an evaluation with a tie savvy IBCLC! Like me! Your pediatrician, while excellent at many many things, is very likely not trained in breastfeeding, oral function or oral restriction. Just like they refer to other specialities such as cardiology, GI, ENT, etc, they should be referring to lactation (or SLP/OT if baby is not breastfeeding) for all things infant (or child) feeding.
Here are just some possible symptoms:
• Latching issues
• Pain or tissue damage of the ni**le
• Not being able to empty the breast of milk
• Prolonged breastfeeding sessions
• Baby not being satisfied when nursing
• Ni**le compression
• Low or slow weight gain for baby
• reccurent breast issues like thrush, clogged ducts or mastitis
• frequent spit up or excessive gas in infant
• constipation of infant
• irritability
• Torticollis or cranial moulding
• sleep concerns
• speech concerns
• picky eating
• snoring or sleep apnea
• gagging or choking
• consistent open mouth posture or drooling
