🚨 ACTION ALERT: Protect South Carolina Midwives & Birth Choice
Families across South Carolina are facing a dangerous precedent: licensed midwives are being criminalized for providing care.
Midwives follow safety protocols — including hospital transfers when necessary — yet state agencies are bypassing their own regulations and pushing cases into criminal court instead of professional peer review.
This threatens birth choice, maternal health, and the future of midwifery in South Carolina.
We need immediate action from state leadership.
✋ TAKE ACTION NOW (3 Steps)
1️⃣ Contact Governor Henry McMaster
Demand that the Department of Public Health follow Regulation 60-24, which requires peer-review by an Ethics Committee before legal action against midwives.
📧 Email the Governor

☎️ Phone
803-734-2100
Ask him to issue an executive directive requiring DPH to follow the law.
2️⃣ Call Legislative Oversight Leaders
Senate Medical Affairs Committee
Ask them to hold a hearing on DPH bypassing midwifery peer review.
Contact Senator Danny Verdin

House Legislative Oversight Committee
Request an investigation into DPH’s failure to use the Midwifery Advisory Council.
Contact Representative Chairman Jeffrey E. "Jeff" Johnson

3️⃣ Call Local Prosecutors
Ask them to drop criminal charges against licensed midwives and return the cases to proper professional review.
📍 Chester County Solicitor
Randy Newman
☎️ 803-377-1141
📍 Beaufort County Solicitor
Duffie Stone
☎️ 843-779-8477
Tell them:
“Hospital transfers are a safety protocol, not a crime. Midwifery matters belong in professional peer review — not criminal court.”
⚖️ Why This Matters
South Carolina law already recognizes midwifery as a distinct profession under SC Code §44-89-30.
When agencies bypass the required Ethics Committee peer review, they undermine due process and threaten access to safe birth options for families across the state.
