Bettie Foster Cozart
October 24, 1930 – June 7, 2026

Bettie Foster Cozart died peacefully at her home in Columbia, South Carolina on June 7, 2026, at the age of 95. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 24, 1930. Her family home was in Bluffton “Fleahop”, Georgia. Most of her childhood and teenage years were spent in Bluffton.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Thomas W. Cozart, Jr., her father, Karl W. Foster, her mother, Helen E. Harrison, and her brothers, Ralph H. Foster and W. Frederick Foster. Surviving family include her children: Vicki Cozart Bowles, Thomas K. Cozart (Lois), W. Keith Cozart (Carla), and Ralph F. Cozart. She has many beloved grandchildren: Lauren Harring (Cody), Jonathan Bowles (Paige), Rebecca Higgins (Joseph), Andrew Cozart (Jessica), Ashley Hendricks (Justin), Foster Cozart, Harrison Cozart (Kathleen), and Gabrielle Liang (Kenneth), and Cassidy Fortier; and great-grandchildren: Bennett, Allaire, Henderson, Abbie, Brady, Axel, Aden, Joey, Cadence, Beckett, and Cassian. She is also survived by her niece Sue Foster, her great-nephew William Foster (Nicole), and great-niece Casey Tracy (Mike), and many beloved great-great nieces and nephews, and cousins Kay Reed and Colby Aiken.

Bettie gave her life to Christ as a child and had fond memories of walking down the aisle and kneeling at the altar to become a member of God’s kingdom. Bettie was a devoted member of Rose Hill Presbyterian Church for over 60 years where she enjoyed the fellowship of many saints. She served as a Sunday school teacher, nursery volunteer, Vacation Bible School teacher and director; she was a member of the Women in the Church Council, and she participated in Circle and many bible studies. She loved her church and was utterly devoted to serving her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, by serving Rose Hill. She also served Jesus by going on a mission trip to Peru.

Anyone who spent any time with Bettie can picture her at the breakfast table studying her bible and reading many, many devotionals every morning. She had a true passion for God’s word. Her bibles are bejeweled with notes and prayers for her family and friends and the very last verse she worked on memorizing was Zephaniah 3:17 “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”

Bettie was a phenomenal teacher for 40 years, and she is well-loved, and fondly remembered by students to this day. She attended college at Georgia State College for Women and graduated from the University of Georgia. She spent the majority of her career teaching Fifth grade students at Caughman Road Elementary School where her legendary Renaissance Festivals encompassing the entire staff and student body are still the topic of joy and comprehensive learning that she designed them to be.

After retirement she enjoyed traveling the world with her daughter and her dear friends. She visited Ireland, Prague, Italy, and New England. She also lived for a short period in California and the Azores islands during her husband’s military career.

In her words, “I am not in any hurry to get there,” but she was anticipating being with her beloved Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ and the joyous reunion she is experiencing in heaven with all of her family and friends who have predeceased her, and her greatest wish is for ALL of her family and friends to eventually join her there.

The visitation for Bettie Cozart will be at 9:30 Saturday morning on June 13, 2026 at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, 229 S. Saluda Avenue, Columbia, South Carolina. The funeral will follow at 10:30 a.m. Bettie’s earthly remains will then be interred at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, South Carolina.

Memorials may be made in Bettie’s memory to Rose Hill Presbyterian Church.

Nancy Compton
June 22, 1945 – June 4, 2026

Nancy Richardson Compton was born in Mullins, SC, to parents Sara Derrick Richardson and Duke Richardson. She died on June 4, 2026, after navigating many years of health challenges with resilience and her signature sense of humor.

Nancy grew up in Lexington, SC, with brothers Doug and Calvin and a circle of dear friends, who often gathered in the back yard to play baseball (when they weren’t getting into other shenanigans).

She and her husband Charlie were in the same first-grade class and started dating in the tenth grade, eventually marrying in 1968. Their 58 years of marriage included many wonderful trips, countless meals around various family tables, a shared faith and dedication to service, and a deep commitment to showing up for the various concerts, science fairs, graduations, dance recitals, awards ceremonies, and professional milestones of their children and grandchildren.

Nancy is a 1963 graduate of Lexington High School and a 1967 graduate of Columbia College, where she majored in Business. Her fierce intelligence, quick wit, and deep kindness were evident in everything she did, especially in raising her three daughters: Christa Compton, Claire Compton, and Carrie Compton Merrell (Judson). As Nana to Addison and Camryn Merrell, she always found the perfect clothes (usually on sale!), kept a freezer full of ice cream, and delighted in all their endeavors. Nancy loved the ocean; she always looked forward to the annual family trip to the beach, for which she insisted on packing enough food to feed an army.

A lifelong Lutheran, Nancy enjoyed serving in a variety of roles at the congregational, synodical, and churchwide levels. You would often find her planning a project with the Mary Circle, heading off to the soup kitchen to serve meals, singing in the choir, or preparing to teach Sunday School. She had a particular heart for supporting the next generation of pastors, serving on the Candidacy Committee for the South Carolina Synod and on several intern committees at St. David Lutheran Church. Nancy’s faith was the centerpiece of her life and witness. She and God were in a lifelong conversation, which now continues for eternity.

Mom’s loyalties were clear to all who knew her: family, church, and the Clemson Tigers, for whom she cheered in every sport and every season. No one was more excited by a Tiger victory than she was, and hers was always the loudest voice in the room when watching a game.

In recent years, when her mobility was more limited, Nancy connected with people near and far via calls, texts, and Facebook comments. She loved celebrating your family trips and your children’s accomplishments, and when she offered her prayers or condolences in difficult times, she really meant it. She also enjoyed doing her daily word puzzles (in ink) and watching reruns of NCIS (especially the Mark Harmon years).

You are invited to share your memories of Nancy at a visitation with her family from 5:00 to 7:00 on Tuesday, June 9, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home in Lexington. A funeral will be held at St. David Lutheran Church (132 St. David’s Church Road, West Columbia) at 2:00 on Wednesday, June 10, with Pastor Greg Brown presiding. One of the few details Nancy made clear about her funeral service was that she wanted people to wear bright colors – nothing drab! You are encouraged to wear something cheerful to reflect her belief in God’s resurrection power.

In addition to her husband, daughters, and granddaughters, Nancy leaves behind her brother Doug Richardson and his wife Wilmer; brother-in-law Ben Compton and his wife Suzanne; brother-in-law Jimmy Compton and his wife Charlotte; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who adored their Aunt Nancy. Her parents and her brother Calvin entered into eternal life ahead of her, along with many other beloved friends and family members.

If you wish to honor Nancy’s memory with a financial gift, you are encouraged to make a donation to St. David Lutheran Church or to an organization in your community that cares for the most vulnerable. Nancy would encourage you to combine that gift with an offering of your time in a way that makes good use of the talents God has given you.

Zander Kage Jeffcoat
November 1, 2003 – June 1, 2026

Zander Kage Jeffcoat, 22, passed away on June 1, 2026. Born November 1, 2003, Zander was born at Lexington medical and raised in Gilbert, South Carolina. He later lived in Nashville, Tennessee.

Zander is the son of Russell “Rusty” Jeffcoat and Cassie Spence. He is the baby brother to his oldest sibling, Ana’Liza “Izzy” Jeffcoat, and niece, Estella. He is the oldest brother to his half siblings, Cheyanne, Sean, and Carter. He is the grandson of surviving grandparent, Victoria “Gail” Knotts. He is the nephew of Thea and Ahn Salmonson, Tonya and Steve Swalgren, Tori and Todd White, and Brett Kinsey. He was the youngest male cousin of the numerous first and second cousins.

From an early age, Zander’s drive and discipline revealed themselves in the ways he committed to what he loved and pursued what challenged him. He graduated from Lexington High School, where his determination and steady focus helped shape a life marked by momentum, purpose, and promise.

Zander’s education and ambition extended well beyond the classroom. In elementary school, he participated in Run Hard, an experience that changed his life and set him on a path defined by endurance and aspiration. Though he was an All-Star Lexington Dixie Youth baseball player, Zander discovered a deeper calling in distance running—trading cleats for running shoes and embracing the long stretch of road ahead. Known for his buzz cut and his refusal to be slowed down by anything unnecessary, he became a Lexington High School varsity runner as early as 7th grade, earning varsity letters in both cross country and track. His achievements, including broken records, became a standard younger athletes looked up to, and his presence in the running community left an imprint that will not fade.

Recognizing life beyond the track, Zander continued his education in culinary arts, beginning in high school. His talent was evident early, allowing him to waive multiple prerequisites as his ability in the kitchen spoke for itself. He began working at Sonic, quickly realizing that milkshakes and burgers came easily, and moved on to a dishwasher position at a local BBQ spot, Belly’s. With characteristic persistence and a willingness to learn every part of the craft, he mastered all the kitchen had to offer and carried both his running and culinary gifts to Nashville.

In Nashville, Zander became a signing cross country runner for Belmont University, balancing college classes, college-level athletics, and the demands of young adulthood with remarkable energy and resolve. He thrived in the kitchen and was not eager to leave the city, because there was still so much he wanted to learn. Aspiring to become a cruise chef, Zander continued to pursue the next step with the same forward motion that defined his life—always reaching for the next adventure, the next opportunity, and the next life to touch. Bright and unforgettable in his presence, he impacted the communities of running, baseball, Lexington, Nashville, and beyond. His legacy is honored through the many experiences he accomplished in a life that moved swiftly, yet meaningfully.

Visitation will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Lexington Chapel, 503 N. Lake Dr, Lexington, South Carolina 29072, on June 6, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Mt. Horeb Church, 1205 Old Cherokee Road, Lexington, South Carolina 29072, on June 7, 2026, at 1:30 pm.

James William Poag Jr.
January 11, 1948 – June 2, 2026
O
Jimmy Poag, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 2, 2026 in Lexington, South Carolina. He was a man of quiet strength and generous spirit — one whose impact on his community, his family, and everyone fortunate enough to know him will be felt for years to come.

Born on January 11, 1948, Jimmy built a life guided by a deep sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to doing right by others. After earning his Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in Columbia, South Carolina in 1974, he dedicated 44 years to the practice of family law. More than an attorney, Jimmy was a trusted guide for thousands of families navigating life's most difficult chapters — he approached every case with care, patience, and a genuine desire to help. His legacy in the courtroom is measured not in verdicts, but in the lives he helped steady.

Outside the office, Jimmy found joy in the outdoors and embraced life with the curiosity of a true adventurer. He was an avid golfer who relished time on the course with friends and family, and loved attending tournaments nearly as much as playing in them. He found peace at the beach and wonder in the mountains, and his travels abroad gave him a broad and generous view of the world. A devoted history buff, he approached the past with the same sharp and inquisitive mind he brought to his work.

Jimmy was also a craftsman in the truest sense — a man who loved working with his hands. His stained glass pieces, created with patience and artistry, are a lasting testament to the care and attention he poured into everything he made.

Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Poag; his sons, Cable and Joshua; and his stepchildren, Isaac and Heather. He leaves behind six grandchildren who filled his life with laughter and love: Will, Gabriel, Anne, Sophia, William, and Ari. He is also survived by his siblings, Missy Atkins and Jeffery Poag, and by numerous nieces and nephews who carry his memory with great fondness. He was predeceased by his parents, James William Poag Sr. and Mary Brickle Poag.

Jimmy Poag lived generously and fully. He gave his time, his talent, and his heart — to his family, to his clients, and to the community he called home. Those who knew him carry forward not only his memory, but the example he set: that a life well lived is one given in service to others.

A memorial service for Jimmy will be held on Sunday, June, 14, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Lexington Baptist Church Chapel, 308 East Main Street, Lexington, SC 29072. Immediately following the service there will be a drop in at the house, 346 Palmer Drive, Lexington, SC.

Barbara C. Rinehardt
August 18, 1942 – May 31, 2026

Barbara C. Rinehardt, 83, was born August 18, 1942 , and passed away May 31, 2026.

Barbara grew up in Batesburg, SC with her sister, Linda Whitman, and her parents, Bill and Grace Cockrell. She earned her high school diploma through the Adult Education Center in Newberry, SC, and later continued learning by taking courses in Introduction to Microcomputers—practical training that supported her work as a bookkeeper and office manager and reflected the steady diligence she brought to everything she did.

Over the years, Barbara worked at Anderson Hosiery Plant in Prosperity SC, Dickert Lumber Company in Newberry, SC, and Shealy Trucking Company in Newberry, SC. She later worked at Finance Central in Columbia, SC, beginning part-time in 2000. After retiring in 2017, she returned to Finance Central this past Sept 2025 on a full-time basis. She loved going back to work at 83, and until her cancer returned, it put a spark in her step—an example of the work ethic and spirited presence that so many came to admire.

Barbara shared 35 years of marriage with her spouse, Wayne Rinehardt. She was beloved by her family, and her love was expressed with an unmistakable warmth and a personality that filled a room. She is survived by her daughter, Tambi (Jimmy) Nida; granddaughters, Jessica Nida and Kristen (Tyler) Held; and great grandchildren, Lincoln and Beckham Held. She is also survived by her grandson, Shawn (Linsay) Carnes and great granddaughter, Laney Carnes; granddaughter, Jennifer (James) Craig and great grandsons Jameson and Greyson Craig; and grandson Brandan (Anne) Carnes and great granddaughters Blakeley and Teagan Carnes. Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn Foose.

Barbara is also survived by her sister, Linda (Dennis) Whitman; niece, Angie (Gene) Hartley; great nephew, Colton (Nicole) Hartley; great-great nephew, Easton Hartley; niece Bevin (Craig) Metts; great niece Gracelyn (Luke) Marriner; great niece, Madison (Billy) Amick; nephew, Channing (Kim) Whitman; great niece, Lexie Whitman; and great nephew, Dylan Whitman.

She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Rhonda (Marty) Watkins; step grandson, Michael (Destany) Watkins and step-great grandson, Henry; step grandson, Ryan Watkins; stepson Rodney Rinehardt; and step grandson, Luke Rinehardt.

A woman faithful to her church, Barbara attended Saluda River Baptist Church regularly, serving on committees and as a greeter, and previously working in the nursery when she was younger. Her faith was not merely spoken but lived—steady, sincere, and evident in the way she showed up for others.

Barbara’s generous spirit was woven into daily life. She was the caretaker in the family no matter the family member’s age—whether it was telling her 63 year old daughter Tambi not to drive back in the dark, reminding her sister Linda that she needed to stop working in the yards, or “hinting” to Kristen that she needed to put socks on the baby’s feet. She gave freely and without hesitation; if someone admired a top she was wearing, she would take it off and give it away. When Barbara loved you, she loved you fiercely, with a devotion that made people feel safe, seen, and deeply cherished.

Barbara found joy in the familiar comforts of home and the fellowship of friends. She loved listening to gospel music, telling Alexa nightly to play her favorites as she drifted off to sleep. She looked forward to attending gospel singing at various churches with a small group from her church 2–3 times a month, and she treasured time with her church friends—often going out to eat after church and enjoying shopping together. She also enjoyed watching westerns on TV (preferably Gunsmoke), as well as Hallmark movies and many of the shows on TV Land and FETV. Above all, she loved her family and valued every opportunity to be together, whether through visits at home or trips back to NC with her daughter.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Barbara’s close friends and family who ensured she was not alone and that she was loved beyond measure in the weeks in the hospital leading up to her death. A special thanks is offered to the MSA Hospice staff, who were not only comforting to Barbara but to her family as well—always available, caring, and providing guidance in her care to ensure a pain free transition.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Saluda River Baptist Church, 3459 Sunset Blvd, West Columbia, SC 29169, with a memorial service to follow at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fred Hutch Merkel Cell Carcinoma Research (https://merkelcell.org/join-the-fight/donate/) or to MSA Hospice Care at 171-A Monroe Lane Lexington, SC 29072.
