As a Fetal Care Nurse Navigator, Jacklyn Brewer, MSN, RN, AMB-BC, accompanies patients and their families as they navigate complex diagnoses during pregnancy.

“My role is to reduce the burden families feel as they try to understand and navigate a complex diagnosis for their child,” Brewer said. “I want families to know they have a consistent point of contact who will listen to their questions and concerns and help them get the information and answers they need.”

Brewer was recently recognized by UK HealthCare with a DAISY Award, honoring the compassionate care and clinical excellence she strives to bring to every case.

She was nominated a recent patient who shared how Brewer went above and beyond at each step – calling her a “lighthouse” for strength and courage throughout the pregnancy journey.

“For families I work with, a lot of times I meet them on their scariest day,” said Brewer. “I just want them to know that they have someone who's going to walk through that journey with them,” shared Brewer.

Please join us in congratulating Brewer on this recognition – a reflection of the power of advanced medicine delivered with individualized support.

Congratulations to Brianna Godbey, RN, on the achievement of receiving a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The DAISY Award is a national award program dedicated to recognizing nurses who go above and beyond to provide compassionate care and demonstrate outstanding clinical skills.

Her nominator, a patient recovering amid a long stay in the hospital, shared that while they received the very best care at UK – it was ultimately an encounter with Godbey helped them to find the resolve to get well enough to go home.

“She helped me get cleaned up. She encouraged me to eat and to walk throughout the day. She continued to show up for me night after night. It was this experience with Nurse Bri that changed my mindset and the trajectory of my physical healing. She encouraged a new resolve,” the patient shared.

“It really made me feel empowered,” said Godbey. “To be that crutch for somebody when they were at their loneliest – and honestly, the worst day of their life. If anything, it was a privilege.”

Nurse Godbey truly emulates what the DAISY Award stands for: extraordinary compassion, clinical excellence, and the power of human connection in health care.

UK HealthCare prides itself on going above and beyond to care for patients. Spring 2026 DAISY Award winner Haley North, RN, BSN, exemplifies that mindset.

For the last four years, North has served as a bone marrow transplant nurse in the Markey Cancer Center, making connections with patients and helping them on their worst days.

“I have a lot of background experience with cancer. I’ve lost people I love to cancer, and so I knew from a young age that this is what I wanted to do,” said North. “Getting a job on the bone marrow transplant unit was God’s gift. People come to us during the scariest times of their life, and I have the ability to make a difference in the way they perceive the coming days.”

North was nominated for a DAISY Award for the tremendous connection she made with an older woman suffering from advanced leukemia. Over multiple rounds of chemotherapy, North supported the patient, provided comfort to her family and prayed with her.

“I have been with so many special people during the hardest times of their lives. It’s humbling to be a safe space and someone they can turn to when they’re scared,” said North.

After multiple rounds of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, the patient is stable and enjoying time with her family. North’s support throughout this challenging ordeal was priceless.

“We bonded so much. I bonded with the whole family. It was a horrible situation, but she is very special,” she said. “For someone to take the time to nominate me, I just wanted to cry. I felt so overwhelmed because this truly is my life’s work. I love it so much.”

The DAISY Award is meant for stories like North’s. She built a powerful, long-lasting connection with a patient, making her health struggles just a little bit lighter.

Augusto Vidoni, an environmental services associate, was one of six recipients of the UK HealthCare spring BEE (Be Extraordinary Every Day) Awards.

BEE Awards recognize non-nursing hospital staff who consistently go above and beyond their duties to provide exceptional service and support to patients.

Vidoni was nominated for a touching interaction he had with a patient’s family member early this year. He was cleaning patient rooms in the ICU when he saw a man struggling with a moment of grief. Nearby nurses were busy and the man was standing alone, so Vidoni stopped what he was doing, went over and quietly hugged the man.

“We see families dealing with loss all the time,” said Vidoni. “Some weeks are more peaceful, but others are rough. You’re there with the patient many times, sometimes caring for them. Nobody sees, but you do it because you want to.”

Environmental Services (EVS) staff can have a substantial impact on a patient and their family’s hospital visit because, not only do they clean the rooms of each guest but, they have multiple chances for interaction and personal connection.

“First of all, we must do our job and clean each room. Sometimes you don’t want to go in the room, but you have to anyway,” he said. “Many patients are very sick, but you talk to them. You make a connection."

Vidoni was honored to receive the BEE Award in early May 2026, and he hopes to approach each interaction with the same compassion that led to this award.

“I’m grateful for the recognition. It truly made me feel appreciated,” said Vidoni. “I genuinely enjoy what I do and working with my team. I was simply doing what I normally do.”

Nurses from UK HealthCare’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic recently received a Team DAISY Award in celebration of extraordinary and compassionate care.

Their nominator described a recent situation in which the team responded to a call from a college-aged patient experiencing a mental health emergency. While a provider remained on the line with the patient, nurses spent over an hour coordinating with campus police in another state to help ensure the student was safely located and supported.

Nurse Manager Brenda Patel-Hughes, BSN, AMB-BC shared that while her team did not expect to win a DAISY Award, simply being acknowledged through a nomination was deeply appreciated.

"It was a big honor for our team to have received the award – and to recognize that all the work that they do every day does matter,” said Patel-Hughes.

Please join us in congratulating all of the nurses in Adolescent Medicine, including: Kathlyn Bertram, BSN, Hannah Durr, LPN, Ashley Gregory, BSN, Brenda Patel-Hughes, BSN, AMB-BC, Corrie Jonas, BSN, AMB-BC, Heidi Mullins, BSN and Domnique Plummer, BSN, AMB-BC.

Thank you for all you do to support adolescent patients with compassionate, individualized and expert care!

Congratulations to Brandy Mathews, DNP, RN, FAONL, for being inducted as a fellow for the American Organization for Nursing Leadership.

Mathews was one of 19 FAONL inductees celebrated during the organization’s 2026 Inspiring Leaders Conference earlier this year. This designation signifies that Mathews and her peers have gone above and beyond to be exemplary leaders who advocate for the profession of nursing.

“[Being inducted] really strengthened my resolve,” said Mathews. “It gave me additional motivation to keep doing the work, advocating for nurses, developing nurse leaders and contributing to the future of healthcare.”

Mathews oversees nursing at UK Good Samaritan Hospital, as well as emergency service and the adult EMS/transport teams.

“I think healthcare in general is a volatile environment right now. We must be laser focused on patients and quality clinical outcomes but also do our jobs in an innovative and fiscally responsible way,” said Mathews. “It is important for nurses to stay involved and have a voice at the table.”

Zulma Calmo, RN, was one of six UK HealthCare nurses named as a recent recipient of the DAISY Award, a national recognition honoring nurses who deliver extraordinary care.

Calmo was nominated by a patient’s mother, who described the care she provided as truly exceptional, after 25 years of hospital experience. During one of the most difficult moments a parent can face, when her daughter coded, Calmo provided both medical expertise and heartfelt support. She comforted the mother, clearly explained each step of care, and treated the child with dignity and compassion. Even after her shift ended, Calmo stayed to offer emotional support, embodying dedication that the family will never forget.

“It all started with an elective intubation in order to perform a bronchoscopy. The patient had some deformities and special needs; this prevented her from clearing the secretions out on her own,” said Zulma. “When it was time to prep for intubation, I told the mother to go have breakfast and have a walk around. I told her if anything were to happen, we would call her right away. She should not be worried about anything, since this was an elective procedure and her daughter was stable.”

Through her compassion, expertise and commitment to both patients and families, Calmo exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award and the mission of UK HealthCare to advance the health of Kentucky.
