Need help after baby comes? You don't have to do it alone.

You either just gave birth, or just adopted a long awaited addition to your family. You are exhausted. Your baby cries and you don’t know why. You need help breastfeeding/chestfeeding/pumping/bottle feeding. You just want to take a shower. You are thirsty and HUNGRY. What a sweet success story. Such great advice. Ask for help if you need it.

There is never anything wrong with reaching out and asking for help when you need it. Last week, I had a momma come in for a lactation consult because her pediatrician told her they needed to start formula. Baby was 5 weeks old and had only gained 7 ounces. Yes, that is a slow weight gain, but all she needed was some help with latching and holds. She came in this morning for a weight check, and I knew as soon as I saw his full cheeks he was doing just fine. He had gained 20 ounces in 7 days!! Momma told me today she was ready to give up nursing but now feels confident and prepared to go back to work knowing she can do this. I don’t share this to boast myself up. I share this as an encouragement for those who need to hear this. IT IS GOOD TO ASK FOR HELP!!

Wow. Vaginall birth of 14 lb baby with no tearing. Awesome!

“A few days ago I had the pleasure of attending the beautiful HOME BIRTH of this BIG man.

His mama saw a Licensed midwife throughout her pregnancy and prepared physically and emotionally for the birth of her second baby.

During her 4 hour long labor she rocked, walked and danced her baby down, she instinctively pushed in the standing position for 15 mins and delivered all..... are you ready for it.... 14 lbs 7oz of him! She was also able to deliver this chunky baby with no tears.

After doing their research this family chose a midwife to guide them through their pregnancy and birth and were able to have an amazing experience in the comfort of their own home.

This baby stayed with his mama on her chest breastfed within the first hour. Mama and baby are doing amazing.

People are capable of delivering their baby, even when they are big! Way to go mama!”

Vernix is such a wonderful substance.

VERNIX CASEOSA....
Vernix is a thick creamy waxy substance that covers the body of the newborn (reminds me of cocoa butter!). It's seen more in babies born a couple of weeks prior to the 'due date' as it reduces towards the end of pregnancy. It is made up of water, fats and proteins.

The vernix protects and nourishes the baby's soft skin, has antimicrobial properties and acts as a barrier in the uterus to stop the amniotic fluid macerating the skin in the womb. Can you imagine how your skin would look after 9 months in the bath!
Vernix is thought to help with an easier transition through the birth canal and it thought to aid temperature regulation at birth.
When a baby is born, the newborn skin undergoes a number of changes and adaptions to the outside world in terms of PH and hydration. Vernix helps to regulate these changes so its worthwhile not bathing baby to soon. Think of vernix as a moisturiser and rub it in rather than wipe it off!
It is recommended by WHO to wait at least 24 hours before bathing a newborn (I would even say 2/3 days) as it has its benefits including reduced risk of infection, better temperature regulation, more skin to skin time leading to better breastfeeding outcomes and blood sugar regulation. If your baby has a little dried blood in their hair and it bothers you, you can always wipe the hair gently with a cloth and warm water.

One of Lexington's midwives is opening a new clinic. More choices for the birthing women of Kentucky (plus women's care too!)

Nancy Shirey (MSNSG ’98) is a licensed advanced practice nurse in the state of Kentucky, as well as a certified nurse midwife by the American College of Nurse Midwives. Born and raised in Hong Kong above a mission hospital clinic, Shirey had a unique childhood. She was exposed to the field of nursing at a young age and almost immediately developed an interest in the profession. When she was little she told her mom she wanted to be a nurse and wanted to “take care of mothers and babies.” And that she did. After completing her primary education in Hong Kong, she relocated to California to receive her BSN. Upon graduation, Shirey enlisted in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps and eventually went on to earn her MSNSG here as a . Now, after more than 20 years in the profession, she is starting up the CHI Saint Joseph Midwife Clinic. And in just a few weeks, she is looking forward to delivering her first grandchild!

“I was fortunate to retire from the military in an area where UF had the midwife educational program. Midwifery gives me the opportunity to serve all women in a way that makes their birth experience a positive experience, even in the worst of times. I can incorporate all the education I received in my undergrad, as well as the clinical training I received at UF, to educate and care for women of all ages. And when I am not delivering babies? I have been a midwife to several dogs and my horses. And assisting with a horse birth is much scarier than a baby!”
