Yoga for Cancer Recovery: New Research Highlights Powerful Benefits

An article in the shows a new clinical trial involving 410 cancer survivors found that a structured yoga programme significantly reduced anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and overall mood disturbance.

The IY(UK) therapy committee recently did a workshop which was based on therapy book. These workshops are available for IY(UK) teachers in the UK.

For many people living with or recovering from cancer, yoga offers more than movement - it can provide a supportive, non-pharmaceutical way to improve sleep, reduce stress and enhance quality of life.

At its heart, yoga helps us reconnect with our breath, our bodies, and our resilience.

Have you experienced the benefits of yoga during a challenging time in your life? We’d love to hear your story in the comments. 💙

Don’t force the twist.
Build the twist.

In Iyengar Yoga, a twist is not created by turning harder.
It is built through preparation.

The body should not be thrown into Parivrtta Trikonasana, Parivrtta Parsvakonasana, or deep seated twists without first creating the right conditions.

We begin simply.
Sukhasana twist.
Virasana twist.
Dandasana variations.
These actions teach the body to sit, lift, and organize the spine before revolving.

Then we deepen with support.
A block.
A chair.
A wall.
A blanket.

Support is not a shortcut.
It gives the body clearer information. It helps the spine lift, the chest open, and the breath remain steady.

Only then do we progress gradually into deeper twists:
Marichyasana III.
Bharadvajasana.
Ardha Matsyendrasana.
Parivrtta standing poses.

The key principle:
Lengthen first. Revolve second.

If the spine is short, the twist compresses.
If the legs are passive, the trunk struggles.
If the breath becomes tight, the pose has gone too far.

Iyengar Yoga teaches us to sequence with intelligence, not ambition.
Because the aim is not to twist more.
The aim is to twist with space.

💬 Which twist do you find most challenging — seated twists or standing twists?

Iyengar Yoga—not just stretching muscles 😉
It’s about stretching awareness, confronting limits, and growing beyond them.

You want to improve.
You want to go further.
Deeper. Stronger. Clearer.

But something keeps repeating.
The same difficulty.
The same resistance.
The same limitation.

Not because you cannot change.
But because you have not fully seen it.

“We can rise above our limitation,
only once we recognize them.” — B.K.S. Iyengar

Recognition is not intellectual.
It is honest.
Uncomfortable.
Precise.
Undeniable.

Until then—
you are not working on the limitation.
You are working around it.

💬 What is one limitation you’ve been avoiding seeing?

Come build strength, stability, and calm—one pose at a time.

The eye is drawn to the raised leg.
That is where attention goes.
But that is not where the pose is organized.

In Supta Padangusthasana,
the structure begins with the leg on the ground.

The femur of the grounded leg must press
downward and backward—
in the opposite direction of the lifted leg.

This counter-action is what integrates the pose.
Without it, the work becomes isolated.

The raised leg stretches.
The rest of the body remains uninvolved.
The belt does not exist to pull the leg closer.

It exists to reveal
whether both sides of the body are participating.

When the grounded leg is understood,
the need to “reach” disappears.

The pose is no longer something you do—
it becomes something you observe.

💬 Where does your attention go first and what does it leave out?
💬 Comment “BALANCE” if you felt this in your practice.

The Spring session of Iyengar Yoga at The Mind Body Studio is officially underway! 🌿
📅 April 2 – June 27

Whether you’re new to yoga or continuing your practice, these classes offer a thoughtful, supportive way to build strength, stability, and awareness.

Many people come to yoga looking for relief—back pain, stiff bodies, busy minds. And while a yoga practice will help with those things, it also opens the door to something deeper.

Over time, yoga invites you to slow down and pay attention—not just to your body, but to your habits, your pace, and the way you move through daily life. The physical work is just one part of the process; the real shift comes in how clearly you begin to see and understand your own patterns.

If you’re interested in a practice that goes beyond stretching—one that encourages steadiness, reflection, and a quieter mind—this is a great place to begin.
