While people may assume a massage needs to be intense or use significant pressure to be effective, a gentler touch can be very helpful — especially for cancer patients.

Massage therapy can help patients with cancer manage pain, fatigue, anxiety and other treatment-related side effects, making it a valuable part of a care plan.

Sallie Wilson is the backbone of Team Kentucky, which competed recently in the Transplant Games of America in Denver, Colo. Before she knew she would need a kidney transplant of her own, Sallie worked as a donor family liaison for the 2006 games hosted in Louisville.

Wilson’s involvement prior to her own diagnosis is a result of her own son’s generosity. After he passed away in a car accident, her son became an organ donor at the University of Kentucky.

“I live every day for him,” she said. “I've been together with this group, most of these people since 1998.”

This community lifted her after her first transplant in 2007 led to seven years of her body rejecting the organ. In 2015, Sallie received her second kidney transplant.

As kids head back to school, let’s also get back to basics with safe sleep practices for our little ones! Remember the ABCs of Safe Sleep:

Alone: Babies should sleep alone in their crib.
Back: Always place your baby on their back to sleep.
Crib: Use a firm sleep surface, like a crib or bassinet, free from pillows, blankets, and toys.

While our older kids head back to the classroom, let’s ensure our infants have a safe sleep space at home. Together, we can create safer sleep environments for every baby in Kentucky!
