Being the responsible one in your family sounds like a compliment... until you realize you don't know how to stop.

Some peoples' brains are wired to fix things. They take up the mantle of helping everyone else feel fulfilled, while at the same time, don't or can't let something else happen. Individuals that can't shut it off often have trouble asking for help and feel an inner guilt when not being productive.

"Fixers" or "Providers" in counseling often feel responsible for helping everyone else's emotions, except their own. It's time to change that.

Send this to the "responsible one."

Things We Wish More People Knew About Therapy:
You can come to therapy when your LIFE is fine, but you don't FEEL fine.
Most of the time, clients are extremely high functioning. What we mean is that they carry on with their daily life as normal, while also wrestling with chaotic feelings and emotions within their own head. Clients are incredibly strong - that's one thing we are grateful for! It's normal for life to be "normal" around you, but to have something that feels less than inside you.

Things you might do because you're anxious—and not realize they're anxiety.

Things Like:
[-] Replaying conversations
[-] Checking your phone repeatedly
[-] Asking people if they're mad
[-] Planning every possible outcome
[-] Needing reassurance

Which one hit a little too close?

You might not be lazy. You might be overwhelmed.
Avoidance, exhaustion, decision fatigue, and feeling behind can all look like laziness.
Days can feel so much longer than the hours that have actually flown off the clock - leading us to disengage from regular social and familial activities. Ideas and options can be running through the brain so often that when we get to a decision that needs attention by a loved one, a blank mind might be all there is to offer. In the midst of a productive schedule, there almost seems to be a never ending list of "should be" things that get accomplished, leading to doubts of self-efficacy.
Which one do you struggle with most?

Things We Wished People Knew About Therapy:
You DON'T have to know what's wrong before you come.
It is absolutely okay to not be able to put your finger on exactly what the problem is when you come in. In fact, most clients DON'T know the ins and outs of the issues they face. That's where helping professionals come in; we are here to help give some clarity and direction with exactly "what" might be wrong.

"For all of us, the person we love most in the world, the one who can send us soaring joyfully into space, is also the person who can send us crashing back to earth...But when we don't feel safe and connected, [nonverbal] moments are like a spark in a tinder forrest."

This time of year brings eggs with candy, bright colored flowers, and rabbits here, there, and everywhere. A useful tool in counseling is what we refer to as "Calm Practice" imagery.

During dysfunctional emotional moments, we work with clients on physically describing the environment they are currently experiencing and then doing the same for an environment they would rather be in. This particular picture can often be a helpful image that displays calmness, peace, and gentleness.

This spring, as we experience the warmth and goodness of this season, allow your mind to take in all of the positive imagery the world has to offer!

It's that time of year. If you have one, you know what it needs. Whether or not you take care of it is up to you. Lawnmowers need maintenance at the start of the season so they continue to run correctly and put out the best version of itself. Sometimes they just need a tune up, and other times some serious work.

People are like lawn mowers, in fact. If you could use a tune up or need some serious work, we want to be the ones to help you!
