Kathryn Ann "Cookie" Burdge

Kathryn Ann “Cookie” Burdge, age 83, of Liberal, KS, peacefully passed away on August 7, 2026, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on November 30, 1942, in Tazewell, VA, the daughter of Lloyd and Catherine Johnson. She and her family moved to Liberal, KS, in 1953.

Kathryn graduated from Liberal High School in 1956. She went on to pursue a career in cosmetology at Venus Beauty Academy in Wichita, KS, where she worked for many years. In 1961, she married Jesse Andrade, and together they were part-owners of the 54 Café & El Patio, a cherished family business. Later, Kathryn worked locally for Amoco Production and Enron/Northern Natural Gas Co. She also owned and operated Kathryn’s Paint & Wallpaper.

On August 18, 1979, she married the love of her life, John Thomas Burdge, in Liberal, KS. Together, they shared 46 beautiful years of marriage and raised three children.

Kathryn was a dedicated and loving mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially adored her role as Mom and Grandma. Her face would light up whenever her grandchildren walked into the room. She had a vibrant personality and a quiet calm, but also a fierce determination to protect those she loved and fix challenges for anyone who asked for help.

While faith and family were her first priorities, she was always there for anyone who needed a listening ear. She became a beloved "second mom" to her children’s friends and her own friends' children. A devoted friend to all who met her, her hand was always extended to pick someone up if they were down. She was deeply passionate about cooking and making sure everyone was well-fed. No one was ever turned away from her home if they needed a hot meal. She made countless dishes that everyone craved—her enchiladas and rum cake were absolute favorites—and she was a giving, loving person to her very core.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Tom Burdge; her loving children, Deanna Maes (Liberal, KS), Mike Andrade and his wife, Jodi (Olathe, KS), and Jon Andrade and his wife, Teresa (Olathe, KS); her cherished grandchildren, Jordan Stuckey and her husband, Ryan, Jessica Morris and her husband, Beau, Melissa Andrade, Justin Andrade and his wife, Callee, Mason Andrade, Bailey Andrade, Ella Andrade, and Harper Andrade; and her great-grandchildren, Cash Morris, Hudson Morris, Shepard Morris, Maverick Morris, and Roland Stuckey, Reme Andrade, Quincy Andrade, and two sister, Debbie Harvey, and Ginny Gilmore

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Catherine Johnson, and her siblings, Lloyd Johnson, Jr., Lucile Johnson, Kenny Johnson, and Jim Johnson.

A Rosary will be prayed on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 7:00 pm at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1510 N. Calhoun Ave., Liberal, KS 67901.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 10:30 am at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1510 N. Calhoun Ave., Liberal, KS 67901. Family and friends are invited to gather for a reception immediately following the mass at the Liberal Country Club, 339 W. 18th St., Liberal, KS 67901, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm.

Flowers and plants are warmly welcome at the services. For those who wish to make a memorial contribution in Kathryn's honor, the family suggests donations to two organizations very close to her heart: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or the Astra Day School the Kansas City Autism Training Center (www.astradayschool.org).

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at the University of Kansas Medical Center Cardiac Care Unit for their exceptional care and compassion during her final days.

Delia Avalos

Delia Avalos, age 57, died on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kansas.

She was born on February 26, 1969, in Durango, Mexico, to Jose and Elizabeth (Andrade) Bustillos.

Delia worked for the Flora Food Group, where she was known for her dedication and steady spirit. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love for her family was evident in all she did. Delia enjoyed dancing sharing moments with those she loved. She held a special place in the community, offering warmth, kindness, and care to those around her. Delia was a comforting presence and a motherly figure. She was an amazing matriarch that was the glue that held her family together. Deeply cherished by her family and friends, Delia will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed.

She is survived by her husband, Juan Carlos Reyes,

Jesus Antonio Mendez Dominguez, age 66, died on Friday, August 7, 2026, at his residence in Liberal, Kansas.

He was born on August 8, 1959, in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Santiago and Emma (Dominguez) Mendez.

Jesus Mendez was a loving and unforgettable soul whose presence brought warmth, laughter and life wherever he went. He cherished his role as a parent and grandparent, and his family was one of the greatest joys of life. He found happiness in the simple beauty of gardening, spending time around animals, enjoying the ocean, and sharing a good seafood meal. Jesus was incredibly social and eccentric in the most wonderful way. He was always the life of the party, bringing people together with his energy, dancing, laughter, and unforgettable personality. He has a deep devotion for mariachi music, especially Vicente Fernández. Above all, Jesus was a faithful man who carried his beliefs close to him. Jesus loved deeply and created memories that will carry on in everyone’s hearts.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Irma Mendez of Liberal, Kansas,

Jesús Méndez fue un hombre amoroso e inolvidable, cuya presencia llevaba calidez, alegría y vida a dondequiera que iba. Valoraba profundamente su papel como padre y abuelo, y su familia era una de las mayores alegrías de su vida. Encontraba felicidad en la belleza sencilla de la jardinería, en pasar tiempo rodeado de animales, disfrutar del océano y compartir una buena comida de mariscos. Jesús era una persona sumamente sociable y excéntrica, de la manera más maravillosa.

Martha Alicia Smith, age 73, died on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at her residence in Liberal, Kansas.

She was born on October 29, 1952, in Elsa, Texas to Ruben C. and Maria (De Los Angeles Ortiz) Longoria.

Martha was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose love and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. She graduated from the Nursing Program at Seward County Community College in 1993 and dedicated her career to caring for others as an LPN. Martha’s gentle spirit, compassionate heart, and deep love for her family will be cherished always, and she will be forever remembered.

She is survived by her son, Israel Brown of Liberal, Kansas,

Three daughters, Snow Garrison and her husband, Chad of Ponderosa, Oklahoma,

In Loving Memory of Our Beloved Father Jose C. Martinez, age 77, died on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at residence in Liberal, Kansas.

With profound sadness and endless love, we announce the passing of our beloved father, whose life was defined by courage, sacrifice, unwavering devotion, and an enduring love for his family.

As the first son of the Martinez Calderon family to cross the border into the United States, he paved the way for a future filled with hope and opportunity. His determination and selflessness opened doors not only for himself, but also for his parents, brothers, and sisters. Because of his sacrifices, the members of the Martinez Calderon family who made the United States their home were able to build successful lives and create brighter futures for generations to come.

He was a strong-willed man with an extraordinary work ethic and a sharp business mind. Through perseverance, integrity, and dedication, he demonstrated that dreams could become reality through honest, hard work.

Above all, he was a devoted husband. Alongside his beloved lifelong wife, Nena, he built a home rooted in love, faith, respect, and family values. Together, they raised their children with strong morals and principles that will continue to guide them throughout their lives.

He was a nurturing, caring, and fiercely protective father who treasured his family above everything else. He treated his three daughters like princesses, always making them feel loved, cherished, and protected. His son was not only his pride and joy but also his trusted right hand, sharing in his work, wisdom, and the values that defined the man he was.

His greatest happiness came from being a grandfather. He adored his grandchildren, who brought endless joy to his heart and will forever carry his love and legacy with them.

Outside of his work and family, he found peace and happiness at his ranch. He loved riding his horses, caring for his animals, and spending time surrounded by the land he cherished. Those moments reflected the simple, genuine spirit that made him so special.

His absence leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Though he is no longer with us, his strength, wisdom, generosity, and unwavering love will continue to inspire his family for generations.

He will be remembered not only for the life he built, but for the lives he made possible.

Con profunda tristeza y un amor infinito, anunciamos el fallecimiento de nuestro querido padre, cuya vida se caracterizó por el valor, el sacrificio, la devoción inquebrantable y un amor eterno por su familia.

Como primer hijo de la familia Martínez Calderón en cruzar la frontera hacia Estados Unidos, allanó el camino hacia un futuro lleno de esperanza y oportunidades. Su determinación y su generosidad le abrieron las puertas no solo a él, sino también a sus padres, hermanos y hermanas.

Gracias a sus sacrificios, los miembros de la familia Martínez Calderón que se establecieron en Estados Unidos pudieron labrarse una vida próspera y forjar un futuro mejor para las generaciones venideras.

Era un hombre de carácter firme, con una ética de trabajo extraordinaria y una aguda visión para los negocios. Gracias a su perseverancia, integridad y dedicación, demostró que los sueños pueden hacerse realidad mediante el trabajo honesto y duro.

Era un padre cariñoso, atento y tremendamente protector que valoraba a su familia por encima de todo. Trataba a sus tres hijas como princesas, haciéndolas sentir siempre queridas, apreciadas y protegidas. Su hijo no solo era su orgullo y alegría, sino también su mano derecha de confianza, con quien compartía su trabajo, su sabiduría y los valores que definían al hombre que era.

Su mayor felicidad era ser abuelo. Adoraba a sus nietos, que le llenaban el corazón de alegría infinita y que siempre llevarán consigo su amor y su legado.

Aparte de su trabajo y su familia, encontraba paz y felicidad en su rancho. Le encantaba montar a caballo, cuidar de sus animales y pasar tiempo rodeado de la tierra que tanto amaba. Esos momentos reflejaban el espíritu sencillo y auténtico que le hacía tan especial.

Su ausencia deja un vacío inconmensurable en los corazones de todos los que le conocieron y le quisieron. Aunque ya no esté con nosotros, su fortaleza, sabiduría, generosidad y amor inquebrantable seguirán inspirando a su familia durante generaciones.

Será recordado no solo por la vida que construyó, sino también por las vidas que hizo posibles.

Donald Cheyne Sumner

Donald Cheyne Sumner, age 45, died on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at his residence in Liberal, Kansas.

He was born on July 7, 1981, in Tell City, Indiana, to Richard Earl and Linda (Holt) Sumner.

Donald received his GED and continued his education at Seward County Technical School, where he earned his welding certificate. He worked as a welder for a tank manufacturing company and took pride in doing honest, hands-on work. Donald had a gift for making others feel welcome. He enjoyed playing golf, especially Wednesday Night Men's Golf, as well as softball and corn hole. More than anything, he treasured time spent with his sons and loved being part of their activities. Outgoing, friendly, and full of life, Donald loved gathering with family and friends at BBQs and group events. He was often the first to arrive and the last to leave, leaving behind countless memories of laughter, and good conversation.

Natividad "Nati" Ovalle Camacho

Natividad “Nati” Ovalle Camacho, age 19, died on Saturday, August 1, 2026, in Dodge City, Kansas.

He was born on June 28, 2007, in Bakersfield, California to Gabriel Ovalle Tellez and Laura Camacho Barrios.

Nati was a 2026 graduate of Liberal High School, where he was known for his dedication and involvement in athletics. He enjoyed participating in football, basketball, and soccer for Liberal High School and also shared his love of the game as a member of Atletico Liberal Youth Futbol Club.

Nati will be remembered as a loving, joyful presence who had a gift for bringing smiles to those around him, especially if you were having a bad day. Known as the “life of the party,” he cared deeply for his friends and loved ones, always wanting to share his blessings with others. His generous spirit was captured in one of his favorite sayings: “If I’m making money, my homies will too,” a reflection of the loyal and giving person he was. Nati always said “Remember I always got you”.

Nati was a member of a truck crew by the name of ONDIADOS SWKS (OPT). Nati always brought the energy and positivity to the crew he will not only be missed as a member of the crew but as a brother to all of us and everyone he impacted outside of the truck scene. OPT will make sure Nati stays with us and forever be with us.

Nati worked for Laura’s Rental and Laura’s Kitchen, where he faithfully helped care for the business while his mother was away. He also worked for Blattner Energy, where he was greatly loved and appreciated by those who knew him.

He was a devoted brother and uncle who loved his family deeply. Nati was always willing to step in for his sisters and his mother, offering his support, protection, and care whenever they needed him. He will be remembered as loving, hardworking, and always eager to learn.

He is survived by his mother, Laura Camacho Barrios of Liberal, Kansas.

Natividad "Nati" Ovalle Camacho, de 19 años, falleció el sábado 1 de agosto de 2026 en Dodge City, Kansas.

Nació el 28 de junio de 2007 en Bakersfield, California, hijo de Gabriel Ovalle Téllez y Laura Camacho Barrios.

Nati se graduó en 2026 en el instituto Liberal High School, donde destacaba por su dedicación y su participación en actividades deportivas. Le gustaba jugar al fútbol americano, al baloncesto y al fútbol con el equipo del instituto Liberal High School, y también compartía su pasión por el deporte como miembro del Club de Fútbol Juvenil Atlético Liberal.

A Nati se le recordará como una persona cariñosa y alegre que tenía el don de hacer sonreír a quienes le rodeaban, sobre todo si alguien estaba pasando por un mal día. Conocido como «el alma de la fiesta», se preocupaba profundamente por sus amigos y seres queridos, y siempre quería compartir sus bendiciones con los demás. Su espíritu generoso quedaba reflejado en una de sus frases favoritas: «Si yo gano dinero, mis colegas también lo ganarán», un reflejo de la persona leal y generosa que era. Nati siempre decía: "Recuerda que siempre te apoyo".

Nati formaba parte de un grupo de camioneros llamado ONDIADOS SWKS (OPT). Nati siempre aportaba energía y optimismo al grupo; no solo le echaremos de menos como miembro del grupo, sino también como un hermano para todos nosotros y para todas las personas a las que influyó fuera del mundo de los camioneros. OPT se asegurará de que Nati siga con nosotros y esté siempre a nuestro lado.

Nati trabajó para Laura’s Rental y Laura’s Kitchen, donde ayudó fielmente a cuidar del negocio mientras su madre estaba fuera. También trabajó para Blattner Energy, donde era muy querido y apreciado por quienes lo conocían.

A Natividad le han precedido en la muerte su padre, Gabriel Ovalle Téllez,

su hermana, Adriana Rosales, y su tía, Juana Camacho.

El velatorio tendrá lugar el jueves 6 de agosto de 2026, de 9:00 a 17:00, Hornung Family Funeral Home,1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.

A continuación se celebrará el rosario a las 19:00 horas del jueves 6 de agosto de 2026 en la iglesia católica de San Antonio de Padua, 1510 N. Calhoun, Liberal, Kansas.

La misa de cuerpo presente se celebrará a las 10:00 de la mañana del viernes 7 de agosto de 2026 en la iglesia católica de San Antonio de Padua. El reverendo Charles Seiwert será el oficiante.

Javier Chacon Marquez

Javier Chacon Marquez, age 52, died on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at his residence in Liberal, Kansas.

He was born on December 06, 1973, in Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Rafael Chacon Hernandez and Maria Martha Marquez Quintana.

Javier received his education in Mexico. He was united in marriage to Rafaela Cereceres, and together they were blessed with two children, his son, Javier, and his daughter, Anali.

Javier worked as a foreman for Southwest Roofing, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment. He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and his memory will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Rafaela Cereceres Marquez,

Son, Javier Chacon Jr. and

Daughter, Anali Chacon Cereceres, all of Liberal, Kansas,

Brothers, Gustavo Chacon Marquez and his wife Osiris Orozco of Juarez, Mexico,

Omar Chacon Marquez and his wife Anabel Burrola of Chihuahua, Mexico,

Sister, Maira Chacon Marquez and her husband, Eberth Saenz of Chihuahua, Mexico.

He is preceded in death by his father, Rafael Chacon Hernandez.

Visitation will be at 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Hornung Family Funeral Home, 1212 W 2nd Street, Liberal, Kansas.

Rosary will follow at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1510 N. Calhoun, Liberal, Kansas.

Funeral Mass will be at 9:00 AM, Thursday, July 30, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Reverend Charles Seiwert will be celebrating Mass.

A burial will follow at Liberal Cemetery.

Javier Chacón Márquez, de 52 años, falleció el jueves 23 de julio de 2026 en su domicilio de Liberal, Kansas.

Nació el 6 de diciembre de 1973 en Delicias, Chihuahua (México), hijo de Rafael Chacón Hernández y María Martha Márquez Quintana.

Javier cursó sus estudios en México. Se casó con Rafaela Cereceres y juntos tuvieron dos hijos: su hijo, Javier, y su hija, Anali.

Javier trabajó como capataz en Southwest Roofing, donde destacaba por su gran ética de trabajo y su compromiso. Era muy querido por su familia y amigos, y su recuerdo permanecerá para siempre en los corazones de todos los que le conocieron y le quisieron.
