Charles W. Harper, age 96, died on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Brookdale Liberal Springs in Liberal, Kansas.

He was born on January 08, 1930, in Hugoton, Kansas, to Thomas Alfred and Linnie Letha (Hawk) Harper.

Charles graduated from Liberal High School and was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Hatfield on February 14, 1948, in Los Angeles, California. They were married for 71 years and made their home on the family ranch near Hugoton, Kansas, until her death on January 9, 2020. Together they raised their growing family. He was a member of the Lone Star Friends Church and a past member of the Hugoton School Board.

Throughout his life, Charles devoted himself to working on the family farm, where his steady dedication and strong work ethic reflected his deep love for the land, his community, and his family.

He is survived by his Daughter Paula Harrison of Deltona, Florida. Sons Rod and his wife Cindy Harper of Liberal,

Brent and his wife LaVonna Harper of Hutchinson, Kansas

Craig and his wife Cathy Harper of Liberal, Kansas. Grandchildren Dustin (Kathy) Harrison, Melissa (Justin) Shelton, Robin (Jeff) Blasi, Nick (Natalie) Harper, Amy Kitts, Jeremy Kitts, Zac Moon, Morgan (Ryan) Brown, Great Grandchildren Ashton Harrison, Derek Danser, Keelan Danser, Dani Danser, Rylee Harris, Brock Shelton, Avery, Burkley and Braxton Blasi, Hadley Harper, and Ella Harper, Madison Trotter, Hunter, Beckett and Oaklyn Moon, Jovi, Journi, and Jersey Brown.

Harriett Ann Arnett, a loving wife, mother and grandmother age 89, died on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Good Samaritan Society in Liberal, Kansas.

Harriett’s journey began on January 11, 1937, in Liberal, Kansas, her parents were Authur and Frieda (Winkler) Lofland.

In 1956 she graduated from Liberal High School. Just a couple of months later, on July 22, 1956, she walked down the aisle to marry the love of her life, Richard Arnett. Together, Harriett and Richard built a beautiful life, sharing 54 incredible years of marriage, growing their family, and unwavering companionship until his passing on April 28, 2010.

Throughout her life, Harriett served her community as a stocker at Kmart, a materials clerk at Walmart, and a school bus driver for USD 480 until her retirement.

She belonged to Seward County 4-H, the Bluebell Extension Homemaker Unit, and the Red Hat Society. Harriett became leader of the pack in the organizations she joined, including serving as PTA president.

Her faith was her anchor. She was a devoted member of her Lutheran church, where she served her congregation through her involvement with the Dorcas Society Altar Guild.

Harriett enjoyed playing the piano and bowling, a favorite pastime of the simple pleasure of a good game and great company. She didn’t know a stranger and was very friends to many. Harriett legacy of love, hard work, and community devotion will live on in the hearts of all her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Kelly Arnett and his wife Angie of Yukon, Oklahoma,

Daughter Gail Owens and her husband, Galen of Liberal, Kansas,

Brothers, Udell Lofland and his wife, Terry of Liberal,

Galen Arnett and his wife, Pat of Wichita, Kansas,

Sister-in-law, Alana Drew of Bandera, Texas,

Nine grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Arnett,

Two sons, Rick Arnett and Dennis Arnett,

Sisters, Tina Leonard and brother-in-law, Bill Leonard,

Eldon Emmett Wriston, age 83, died on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Sunporch of Dodge City, Kansas.

He was born on November 27, 1942, in Liberal, Kansas, to Luel Theron and Alta Crites Wriston.

Eldon graduated from Liberal High School in 1961 and went on to serve his community and state with distinction through many years of dedicated service in the Kansas National Guard. He worked as an over the road truck driver for many years. Eldon will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, one daughter, and two grandchildren.

He is survived by his two sons, Steven Wriston of Alabama, and

Eldon Wriston of Dallas, Texas,

Daughter, Nickie Wriston of Effingham, Illinois, and

Two grandchildren, Chance,

Jesus Esparza Alvarado, age 60, died on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at his residence in Liberal, Kansas.

He was born on April 6, 1966, in Delicias Chihuahua, Mexico, to Manuel Esparza Gomez and Manulela Alvarado Marquez.

Jesus had a high school education and worked as a Derrick Hand in the oilfield. He was united in marriage to Paulina Esparza in March of 1992 in Rosales, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Jesus was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Jesus was a hardworking man. He was very friendly and always put others first. He enjoyed spending time with his family, listening to music, reading, and above all, working. Jesus never took days off and when he did, he continued to work at home with building projects, mechanic work, carpentry, and farming. He adored his granddaughters and kids more than anything and always made sure his family had what they needed.

He is survived by his wife, Paulina Esparza,

Jesús Esparza Alvarado, de 60 años, falleció el domingo 17 de mayo de 2026 en su domicilio de Liberal, Kansas.

Nació el 6 de abril de 1966 en Delicias, Chihuahua (México), hijo de Manuel Esparza Gómez y Manulea Alvarado Márquez.

Jesús tenía estudios de secundaria y trabajaba como operario de torre de perforación en los yacimientos petrolíferos. Se casó con Paulina Esparza en marzo de 1992 en Rosales, Chihuahua, México.

Jesús era un esposo, padre y abuelo cariñoso. Jesús era un hombre muy trabajador. Era muy amable y siempre anteponía a los demás. Disfrutaba pasando tiempo con su familia, escuchando música, leyendo y, sobre todo, trabajando. Jesús nunca se tomaba días libres y, cuando lo hacía, seguía trabajando en casa en proyectos de construcción, mecánica, carpintería y agricultura. Adoraba a sus nietas y a sus hijos más que a nada y siempre se aseguraba de que su familia tuviera lo que necesitaba.

James "Dickie" Richard Howell

James Richard Howell (Dickie to his family and friends), passed away at his home on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 90.

Dickie was born September 26, 1935, in Meade, Kansas to James A. and Martha M. (Sawyer) Howell. He attended his school years in Meade, graduating in 1953. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1954. He served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1957 with the rank of Sergeant.

He was an active oilfield consultant most of his life and owned his own company, How Co., in Liberal, Kansas until his retirement.

Dickie was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame in 2011.

He married the love of his life, Anna Marie Allen on July 25, 1959. She passed away May 8, 2022.

He is survived by his three children, Valencia Hernandez of Halstead, Kansas,

and Deanna Howell of Wichita, Kansas, and

James “Jimmy” R. Howell II of Henderson, Nevada,

Three grandchildren,

Kera Snyder of Kansas City, Kansas,

Adreanne Hernandez of Liberal, Kansas, and

Anthony Hernandez of Kansas City, Kansas,

eight great grandchildren,

Sister, Laverta Delong of Meade, Kansas, and

A host of nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James A. and Martha M. Howell, and

Dorothy "Liz" Starkey

Dorothy “Liz” Starkey, age 70, died on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at Texas Specialty Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.

She was born on October 17, 1955, in Glenville West Virginia, to Oren and Dortha Gillespie Hess.

Liz graduated high school and went on to serve in the Army working as an Army nurse at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, where she met Michael Logan Starkey. They married on June 21, 1975, in Denver, Colorado. Michael preceded her in death on October 1, 2021.

Liz was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker who prioritized her family.

Her kindness and dedication left a lasting mark on everyone she met, and her absence will be deeply felt by all whose lives she touched.

Liz cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. She also had a deep compassion for all animals and loved family camping trips, especially sharing stories around the campfire. Liz was an avid reader. Riding motorcycles with Michael gave her a sense of adventure. Liz's legacy lives on through the joyful moments she created and the love she gave so freely.

She is survived by two sons, Christopher Logan Starkey, and wife, Lindsay Starkey, of Liberal, Kansas,

James Samuel Starkey, and wife, Cassie Starkey, also of Liberal, Kansas,

Grandchildren, Shanna Starkey, Zoey Starkey, Peyton McDaniel, Everlee Colter, Clara Starkey, and Harley Starkey

She is preceded in death by her parents, Oren and Doretha Hess.
