I have been wondering more about burnout and the impact on our body. Maybe burnout is not only about doing too much, but maybe it is also about not allowing our body enough true recovery experiences? It does require time and space in our very full lives.

I can "finish" my workday, but sometimes my body never really leaves work, even after I have closed my laptop, and all of the emails have been replied to.

Often, I am aware that my "system" is still running, scanning, preparing, holding. Clients and I are often exploring the question: Do we actually allow ourselves to recover after significant stress, or do we simply keep functioning? I believe that most of us simply keep functioning.

Today, as we celebrate freedom, I keep thinking about how freedom is not only something we experience externally. It is also something we may or may not experience inside the body...the freedom to rest without guilt, to speak without bracing, to be still without fear, to feel joy without waiting for something to go wrong, to set a boundary without collapse, to recover after stress, and the freedom to live from choice instead of survival.

Many of us are outwardly free, but inwardly our nervous systems are still organized around protection...still scanning, anticipating, holding, preparing.

It is often our body doing what it learned to do in order to survive.

So today, I am grateful for the freedoms we can name and celebrate.

And I am also thinking about the quieter forms of freedom many people are still longing for...freedom to feel safe in our own body, to come back to ourselves, to live with more breath, more presence, more dignity, and more choice

Those kinds of freedom matter too. Happy 4th of July.

Have you ever noticed that your body is always talking...even when you aren't?

Your heart is communicating, your breathing is communicating, your muscles are communicating.

Even the amount of oxygen your blood is carrying tells part of your story.

Long before we consciously recognize stress, our physiology often does. One of the things that fascinates us most is that our bodies are constantly giving us information.

Not to scare us, or shame us...but to help us understand ourselves a little better.

Sometimes learning to listen is the beginning of healing.

✨ Welcome Renee! ✨

We’re excited to welcome Renee Wubbenhorst, who has recently begun her practicum with us at the Kansas City Neuroplasticity Institute.

Renee is a graduate student in the Counseling & Psychology program at Avila University, where her training has focused on child and adolescent development, diagnosis, and treatment. While working with youth is a passion of hers, she’s eager to support clients across the lifespan as she continues to grow into a well-rounded, thoughtful clinician.

Renee is deeply committed to providing evidence-based, high-quality care and to creating a safe, trauma-informed, and client-centered space for healing and growth. She’ll be seeing clients with KCNPI throughout the spring semester, and we’re grateful to have her as part of our team.

Please join us in giving Renee a warm welcome! 💛
