The first doctors treated illness with co***ne, magnets, and a belief in evil spirits.
No shade to the field of medicine, 👍 it's just where it started.
For centuries, sickness got blamed on restless spirits 👻👻 and used co***ne tonics and "magnetic" healing,
Then, slowly, science caught up to the instinct.
🚿 In the 1860s, surgeons finally learned to sterilize their instruments
💧 In 1970, the sealed sterile IV bag we still use today arrived.
💊The first lab-made medicine appeared in 1869 from coal tar first, then petroleum, which is still the starting point for nearly every medication on the shelf today.
Humble, even strange, beginnings, refined and perfected over time.
Chiropractic has walked that very same road.
People have moved the bones of the spine to ease pain for thousands of years. Hippocrates himself wrote, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases." The modern profession took shape in 1895, with its first school in 1897.
Those early chiropractors knew they were onto something. But their explanation was simple: a bone is "out," put it back; a nerve is "pinched," or relieve it, "remove the interference."
Patients of chiropractic knew it was onto something as well, while they didnt understand the biology they knew from the way they felt.
Those early doctors and patients weren't wrong, but
they had no idea what the science of the 2000s would uncover about the power of the adjustment.
Using brain imaging and careful measurement, modern researchers have shown that an adjustment doesn't just move a joint, it changes how the brain processes signals coming from the body.
Studies have measured sharper body awareness, better balance in older adults, increased muscle strength, reduced pain, improved joint range of motion increased visual acuity, and clearer communication between brain and body after care. The old "bone out, nerve pinched" picture has grown into something far richer: a story about your spine, your nervous system, and how well your brain reads your body.
The instinct was right all along. The science just needed time to explain it.
That's how progress works, in medicine, and in chiropractic.
