The employee must have a current connection to the railroad industry at the earlier of retirement or death to qualify you for survivor benefits under the Railroad Retirement Act. Otherwise, the Social Security Administration would pay the survivor benefits.
If you are receiving an RRA spouse annuity in the month the employee dies, your benefit will be converted to a widow(er)'s annuity. Only proof of the employee's death is needed.

Is embalming mandatory by law?
It is not, but there are factors of time and health that may make embalming either appropriate or necessary. Please note that embalming may be required if the deceased is being transported by air to another country where local laws need to be observed. You can always contact us if you have questions on this subject, as we know it can be an unfamiliar subject to many.
